Chapter 2 - The Iron Citadel

By nightfall, the small town of Oakridge was left miles behind us.
A convoy of four bulletproof Suburban SUVs glided silently down the private, pine-lined highway leading into the Appalachian foothills. Rain continued to streak across the tinted glass windows of the central vehicle.
Inside the back seat, Theo was fast asleep, his head resting heavily in my lap. He was wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket that Ethan had retrieved from his private jet's cabin. One of his tiny hands was loosely wrapped around my thumb, his breathing soft and rhythmic.
Ethan sat directly across from us in the rear-facing leather captain’s chair. He hadn't taken his eyes off Theo for three hours. The ruthless billionaire who usually commanded international boardrooms looked utterly mesmerized, his large hand hovering an inch above Theo’s small shoulder, as if afraid that touching him would make the boy shatter into mist.
"He sleeps like you," Ethan said quietly, his voice low so as not to wake the child. "You always curled your left hand into a fist when you slept."
"Ethan, this is kidnapping," I whispered angrily, keeping my voice low. "You can't just bundle us into armored cars and drive us across state lines! I have a life. I have a job!"
"You had a job paying twelve dollars an hour in a diner with a leaking roof, Emily," Ethan replied, his expression hardening slightly. "You lived in an apartment building with three active fire code violations. Do you have any idea what went through my head when my intelligence team pulled your address file two hours ago?"
He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees, his eyes searing into mine.
"You are my wife," he said firmly. "I never signed the death certificate declaration. Legal probate on your estate was frozen because I refused to let the court seal the file. In the eyes of the law, Emily, you are still Mrs. Ethan Brooks."
"I ran because your family wanted to kill me!" I hissed back, tears of frustration stinging my eyes. "Your uncle Richard is still on the board of Brooks Global! Your cousins control the security contracts! If they realize Theo exists, he becomes a threat to their inheritance!"
Ethan’s eyes turned to cold, liquid steel.
"My uncle Richard was removed from the executive committee three years ago," Ethan revealed softly. "And as for the rest of the board... I don't just run Brooks Global, Emily. I own ninety-two percent of the voting equity. I spent the last six years systematically destroying every person who made you feel unsafe in my home."
The SUV slowed to a smooth stop as massive, ten-foot iron gates swung open automatically.
Beyond the gates stood the Brooks Estate—a sprawling, glass-and-stone architectural masterpiece nestled against the cliffside, surrounded by miles of private forest and guarded by high-tech security towers. It was a fortress built not just for luxury, but for absolute defense.
The vehicle door was opened by Marcus, Ethan’s head of security—a scarred, towering man I remembered from our early days of marriage.
"Welcome home, Mrs. Brooks," Marcus said, bowing his head with genuine respect. "The east wing has been prepared. Medical staff are on standby for young Master Theo's routine checkup."
Theo stirred in my lap, rubbing his eyes with his little fists. He sat up, squinting at the grand, warmly lit entrance of the mansion.
"Mommy...?" Theo asked, his voice sleepy. "Where are we? Is this a hotel?"

Ethan stepped out of the vehicle first, then reached back inside, holding his hand out to my son.
"No, buddy," Ethan said, his voice softening into a warmth I had never heard him use with anyone else in the world. "This is home. And I'm your dad."
