Chapter 3 - The Lab on the Top Floor

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the Charlotte service center was in a state of absolute panic.

A fleet of black corporate sedans had arrived at the facility, accompanied by Jonathan Bennett’s elite personal engineering team from the headquarters in Raleigh. Richard Sterling was nowhere to be found—his security badge had been revoked at midnight, and audit teams were currently seizing every file in his office.

Annie arrived at work wearing her usual worn sneakers and navy pants, carrying her red notebook.

When she stepped into the main lobby, Samuel Wilson was waiting for her, looking pale and excited.

"Annie," Samuel whispered, leaning in. "Mr. Bennett is waiting for you on the fourth floor."

"The fourth floor?" Annie frowned. "That's just old storage and disused lab space."

"Not anymore it isn't," Samuel said.

Annie took the elevator up. When the doors opened, her jaw dropped.

Overnight, the dusty, abandoned floor had been cleared out. State-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, 3D titanium printers, biomechanical testing rigs, and digital rendering stations had been brought in. Four senior research engineers from Bennett Headquarters were setting up workstations.

Jonathan Bennett was standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a tablet. When he saw her, he gestured for her to come over.

"Good morning, Annie," Jonathan said smoothly. "Welcome to your new workspace."

Annie looked around the pristine room, completely overwhelmed. "Mr. Bennett... I don't understand. What is all this?"

"This is the new Bennett Mobility Innovation Lab," Jonathan declared. "And you are the Lead Junior Research Specialist."

Annie gasped. "I'm an intern! I don't even have my associate degree yet!"

"You have something far more valuable than a piece of paper, Annie," Jonathan said, stepping toward her. "You have an intuitive understanding of biomechanics that my senior team lost years ago behind spreadsheets and profit targets. Yesterday, you identified a fluid seal defect in four seconds that cost my engineering team six hundred thousand dollars in failed field tests."

He handed her a newly printed corporate ID badge. Her photo was on it, right above the title: LEAD RESEARCH SPECIALIST - SPECIAL PROJECTS.

"Your first assignment," Jonathan said, pointing to a custom bio-density scanner in the center of the room, "is to help us design a brand-new, custom-fitted, carbon-fiber prosthetic for yourself. No corporate filters. No insurance paperwork. No 'minimum expectations.' We build it from scratch, using your red notebook."

Tears pricked the corners of Annie’s eyes, but she blinked them back, swallowing hard. "Why are you doing this for me?"

Jonathan looked out the window at the bustling city below.

"Because twenty-five years ago, I started this company in a garage with nothing but a broken tool kit and a dream to help people walk," Jonathan said softly. "I built an empire, but somewhere along the way, men like Richard Sterling turned my dream into an assembly line of denial letters. You reminded me who I used to be, Annie. Now, let's get to work."
