Chapter 8 - The Transformation

The boardroom was dead silent for five long seconds before Marcus Vance slowly began to applaud. Within moments, the entire board stood up, giving a resounding standing ovation to the eighteen-year-old girl who had just out-engineered their entire multi-million-dollar R&D division.

The vote was unanimous.

The board voted to immediately fund the Bennett-Carter Innovation Initiative—a new division dedicated to developing accessible, high-performance prosthetics. Furthermore, the board voted to restore all denied warranty claims across the country from the previous three years, establishing a fifty-million-dollar fund to ensure no patient was ever left with a broken limb due to administrative greed.

That evening, a grand press conference was held in the main lobby of Bennett Headquarters.

Luminaries from the medical field, journalists, and major news networks filled the hall.

Jonathan stood at the podium, surrounded by flashing cameras.

"Twenty-five years ago," Jonathan told the world, "I believed that technology alone could heal people. I was wrong. Technology without empathy is just cold metal."

He gestured toward the side of the stage.

"Today, I am proud to announce the new Vice President of Biomechanical Research and Chief Human-Centered Architect of Bennett Medical Technologies—Annie Carter."

Annie walked onto the stage to a thunderous storm of applause. She walked smoothly, proudly, her stride effortless and graceful on her black Phoenix leg.

Her mother—a hardworking woman who had worked two jobs to support Annie after her childhood accident—sat in the front row, weeping tears of pure joy alongside Samuel Wilson, who had flown in from Charlotte.

Annie stepped up to the microphone.

"To every patient who was told their insurance didn't cover their dignity," Annie said into the flashing cameras, "we heard you. And we are coming to give you your life back."
