Chapter 5 - The Sabotage

By the fourth week, the prototype—designated the BMT-A1 "Phoenix" Socket—was ready for its first physical assembly and dynamic field test.

It was a masterpiece of biomechanical engineering: ultra-lightweight carbon fiber, a custom silicone-gel dynamic liner, a micro-hydraulic silent knee, and a pressure-sensitive smart ankle designed directly from Annie’s notebook.

Annie stood in the center of the lab, looking at the sleek, matte-black prosthetic resting on the velvet-lined fitting table. It looked like something from thirty years in the future.

"Ready, Annie?" Dr. Chen asked gently.

Annie took a deep breath. "Ready."

She unstrapped her old, battered Gen-1 leg—the one with the fraying strap and the slipping lock—and set it aside forever.

Dr. Chen and his assistant carefully aligned the Phoenix socket with her limb. The internal pneumatic seal activated with a soft, quiet whoosh. The pressure distributed perfectly across her skin, fitting like a second skin without a single point of pinching or friction.

Annie stood up.

There was no clicking. No metallic grinding. No pain.

She took a step forward. The knee swung smoothly, mimicking the natural micro-flexion of a human leg. She took another step, then another. She walked across the lab, her gait completely even, completely effortless.

Tears spilled over her eyelashes as she looked up at Jonathan. "It... it feels like nothing is missing."

Jonathan smiled, his chest swelling with profound emotion. "That’s because nothing is missing, Annie."

Suddenly, the fire alarms inside the building shrieked.

Red emergency lights flashed, and the automated overhead sprinklers burst open, drenching the lab in cold water.

"What is happening?!" Dr. Chen shouted, rushing to cover the digital rendering servers.

At that moment, two men dressed in black corporate security uniforms burst into the lab, accompanied by a woman in an expensive trench coat.

Victoria Sterling.

"All activity in this room is halted immediately!" Victoria announced, her voice piercing through the blare of the fire alarm. She held up an official legal injunction. "By order of the Board of Directors of Bennett Medical Technologies, this facility is officially impounded pending an intellectual property theft investigation!"

Annie froze, stepping protectively in front of the testing table.

Jonathan stepped forward, water dripping from his tailored coat, his face terrifyingly calm. "Victoria. What is the meaning of this illegal intrusion?"

May you like

"It’s not illegal, Jonathan," Victoria sneered, looking at Annie with cold contempt. "This intern took proprietary technical drawings from Richard Sterling’s office month ago. We have reason to believe this entire 'prototype' was built using stolen corporate trade secrets. Security, seize all hard drives, notebooks, and prototype hardware in this room!"

The two security guards lunged toward the fitting table—and toward Annie’s red notebook.
