Chapter 6 - THE POISONED SILK

The Grand Ballroom of the Hotel des Bergues in Geneva was a shimmering sea of luxury.

Crystal chandeliers cast a warm gold light over three hundred distinguished guests: European diplomats, Swiss bankers, international philanthropists, and high-society elites. Classical violin music drifted through the fragrant air, filled with the scent of white roses and expensive champagne.

Julian Carter stood near the champagne tower, wearing a tailored tuxedo, grinning widely as he shook hands with an ambassador. Beside him, Victoria Sterling looked radiant in a emerald-green silk gown, her canary diamond ring sparkling under the lights.

“You look like the President of the Foundation already, darling,” Victoria whispered into Julian’s ear, sliding her arm through his.

“Ethan is finished,” Julian replied in a hushed, triumphal tone. “He’s completely lost his mind over that orphan girl. He didn't even show up for the preliminary board briefing this afternoon. By midnight, the board will vote to declare him mentally unfit to manage the trust, and I will assume full power.”

“And the child?” Victoria asked quietly.

“Stefan is handling it tonight,” Julian muttered, sipping his champagne. “While everyone is here at the gala, Stefan will ensure the mansion suffers an unfortunate heating system accident. The orphan, the twins... a sad, tragic end to a broken family. Ethan will be so devastated he’ll sign whatever papers we put in front of him.”

Suddenly, the music stopped.

The heavy gilded doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung open.

A quiet murmur rippled through the crowd of three hundred elites, parting like the Red Sea.

Ethan Carter stepped into the ballroom.

He was dressed in an absolute masterpiece of a midnight-blue tuxedo, looking every inch the powerful, unbreakable titan the business world feared. But he was not alone.

On his right walked Grace, wearing a soft pink velvet dress, stepping gracefully in polished patent-leather shoes.

On his left walked Lily, wearing a matching blue dress, her smile radiant and full of life.

And walking between them, holding both of their hands, was Maya. She wore a simple, elegant white dress, her small face calm, her clear hazel eyes scanning the room without a trace of fear.

The ballroom exploded into collective, gasp-filled shock!

“Mon Dieu!” a French banker exclaimed. “The Carter twins! They’re walking!”

“Is that Grace and Lily?! They were paralyzed!”

“It’s a miracle! Look at them!”

Flashes from high-society photographers lit up the room like lightning!

Julian’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering into a hundred sharp fragments against the parquet floor. Victoria’s face turned the color of chalk, her hand clutching her pearls so tightly her knuckles turned white.

“No...” Julian stammered, stepping back into the crowd. “No, no, no... this can't be...”

Ethan guided his three daughters directly toward the center stage. He stepped up to the podium, pulled the microphone toward him, and looked out over the stunned audience.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Ethan’s voice echoed powerfully through the high-end sound system. “Welcome to the 30th Annual Carter Foundation Gala.”

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, many standing up to cheer for the miraculous recovery of the young girls.

Ethan raised a hand, demanding silence. The room fell instantly quiet.

“Tonight,” Ethan continued, his eyes locking onto Julian and Victoria standing in the center of the room, “we are here to celebrate not just recovery, but the uncovering of the truth.”
