Chapter 9 - THE GIFT OF BLOOD

That evening, a formal ceremony was held at the Geneva Municipal Courthouse.

Unlike the loud, flashbulb-filled spectacle of the gala, this meeting was private, quiet, and sacred.

Judge Helene Rochat sat behind her mahogany desk in her private chambers. Present in the room were Ethan, Marcus Sterling, Grace, Lily, and Maya.

On the desk lay the final adoption decree, transferring full, permanent legal parenthood of Maya Harper to Ethan Carter, officially naming her Maya Eleanor Carter.

“Mr. Carter,” Judge Rochat said, looking over her glasses at the billionaire. “You are aware that adopting a child with such a unique, documented background will bring immense attention and responsibility? You will be her legal guardian, her protector, and her father in the eyes of the law and the state.”

Ethan looked down at Maya, who was wearing a brand-new yellow summer dress, her small hand slipping securely into his large, calloused palm.

“I have spent my life building financial empires, Your Honor,” Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. “I thought my purpose was to build things that last. But I was wrong. My purpose is to protect my children. Maya saved my family's life. I will spend the rest of my life ensuring no one ever hurts her again.”

Judge Rochat smiled warmly. She picked up her pen, signed the heavy parchment documents with thick black ink, and pressed the official red seal of the Swiss Confederation onto the bottom of the page.

CLACK.

“Congratulations, Mr. Carter,” Judge Rochat said, handing the copy to Ethan. “She is your daughter.”

Grace and Lily immediately cheered, jumping up and down, hugging Maya from both sides!

“You’re our sister now!” Grace laughed, pulling a flower hairpin from her hair and placing it in Maya’s soft brown curls. “A real sister!”

“And you have to sleep in our room tonight!” Lily declared happily. “We put the three beds together!”

Maya looked down at the official document bearing her new name: Maya Eleanor Carter.

For six years, she had been a number in a cold, locked room. She had been called an anomaly, an orphan, a ghost on the steps of a cathedral.

Now, she looked up at the tall man standing beside her—a man whose heart was no longer made of steel, but of deep, fierce, unyielding love.

“Thank you... Dad,” Maya whispered.

Ethan dropped to one knee, wrapping his arms around all three of his daughters, holding them close against his chest as the warm spring sunlight streamed through the courthouse window.
