Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

The chaotic shouts of Ophelia and Vanessa filled the terminal as the handcuffs clicked tightly around their wrists.

“Julian! You can’t do this to me! I’m your wife!” Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the marshal’s grip. Her pristine designer hair had fallen into disarray, her face twisted in a mixture of terror and rage. “I love you! I did everything for our family!”

“You never loved anyone, Vanessa,” Julian said softly, looking down at her with pure disgust. “You married a ghost, and you targeted an innocent child.”

Ophelia glared at Julian, her teeth bared like a trapped animal. “You think you’ve won, Mercer? You have nothing! Clara’s trust is sealed! You don't have the original authority documents! Without them, Ethan gets nothing when he turns thirteen, and the trust defaults to court probate!”

Julian reached into his jacket once more, pulling out the blue leather folder bearing the gold seal of the Mercer-Vane trust.

Ophelia’s eyes nearly bulged out of her head. Her jaw dropped open in absolute horror.

“The secret panel in your wardrobe was clever, Ophelia,” Julian said, his voice dripping with icy satisfaction. “But you underestimated my son. Ethan found it while you were busy trying to ruin his life.”

“No... no! You broke into my private quarters!” Ophelia gasped, her voice cracking.

“It’s my house, Ophelia. Everything in it belongs to me,” Julian replied coldly. “Including the evidence of your twelve years of grand larceny.”

The marshals dragged both women away toward the waiting police cruisers. As Vanessa was shoved into the back seat of the vehicle, she looked through the tinted window at Julian, realizing with absolute finality that her opulent lifestyle, her social standing, and her freedom were gone forever.

Marcus Vance stepped up beside Julian, holding a tablet. “The preliminary injunctions have been granted, Julian. Vanessa’s accounts are frozen. The divorce papers have been filed on grounds of severe fraud and criminal endangerment. She won't receive a single penny.”

“And the criminal charges?” Julian asked, watching the police cars pull away with sirens wailing.

“Between child abandonment, wire fraud, and international trust tampering, Ophelia is facing fifteen years in federal prison. Vanessa will likely get eight to ten,” Marcus said, a triumphant smile touching his lips. “They’re done, Julian. Completely done.”

Julian took a deep breath of the fresh ocean air. The heavy weight that had rested on his shoulders since midnight on Friday finally lifted.

“Let’s go home, Marcus,” Julian said softly. “My son is waiting.”
