Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Voice

Two days later, the Mercer estate in Lake Forest was quiet once more. The oppressive atmosphere created by Vanessa and Ophelia had vanished entirely. The house felt warm, bright, and open.
Julian sat with Ethan in the library, the blue leather folder lying open on the table between them.
Along with the legal trust documents, the secret box contained a small, silver USB drive that Julian had not noticed during the initial chaotic night. They had plugged it into Julian’s computer, discovering a single audio file dated a week before Clara’s tragic death nine years ago.
Julian clicked play.
A soft, warm, melodic voice filled the quiet library—a voice Julian had missed for nearly a decade.
“Hello, my sweet Ethan,” Clara’s voice spoke through the speakers, gentle and trembling with emotion. “If you are listening to this, it means I am no longer there to hold you, to read you bedtime stories, or to watch you grow into the wonderful man I know you will become.”
Ethan gripped Julian’s hand tightly, tears rolling silently down his cheeks. Julian squeezed his son’s hand, his own eyes wet with emotion.
“Ethan, I created this trust not to make you wealthy, but to give you freedom,” Clara’s recording continued. “I knew my stepmother Ophelia was dangerous and greedy. I hid these documents where only someone who truly loved you could help you find them. If you are hearing this, it means your father, Julian, is by your side. Julian, my love... thank you for protecting our boy. I knew long before our wedding that you were chosen to be his guardian, his anchor, and his hero.”
The recording clicked off, leaving a beautiful, profound silence in the room.
Ethan buried his face against Julian’s chest, weeping openly. Julian wrapped his arms tightly around his son, kissing the top of his head.
“She loved you so much, Ethan,” Julian whispered, his voice thick with tears. “She planned everything to make sure you were taken care of.”

“And she knew you’d save me,” Ethan sobbed softly.
“I will always save you, Ethan,” Julian vowed. “Always.”
