Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Gold

One year later.

The morning sun washed over the private beach behind the Lake Forest estate, painting the calm waters of Lake Michigan in shimmering shades of gold and pearl.

On a soft white wool blanket spread across the sand sat Sophie, wearing a yellow sundress, her hair tied back with a silk ribbon.

Beside her lay a tiny wooden cradle carved from solid mahogany by Dante himself.

Inside the cradle, wrapped in a soft white cashmere blanket, slept four-week-old Clara Sophie Cavallaro—a healthy baby girl with a head of dark hair like her father’s and bright, curious brown eyes like her mother’s.

Dante walked down the wooden stairs from the terrace, barefoot, wearing rolled-up linen trousers and a loose white shirt. He carried a silver tray with two mugs of hot coffee and fresh croissants.

He set the tray on a wooden crate beside the blanket and sat down beside Sophie, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side.

He looked down into the cradle, his harsh, powerful face softening into a look of complete, unutterable reverence.

"She’s sleeping," Dante whispered, as if afraid his deep voice might wake the child.

"She took after her father," Sophie teased softly, resting her head on his shoulder. "She only sleeps when she knows everyone is safe."

Dante chuckled—a low, rich sound that echoed across the quiet beach. He reached down with his large, scarred index finger, gently touching the baby’s tiny hand. The infant’s fingers instantly curled around his, holding on with a surprisingly firm grip.

Dante looked out at the vast, open horizon of the lake, feeling the warm sun on his skin, the sea breeze in his hair, and the weight of his wife and daughter beside him.

The dark alleyways of the South Side, the blood on the snow, the six months of hatred and grief—it had all burned away, leaving behind a foundation of iron, truth, and unconditional love.

"Thank you, Sophie," Dante murmured, kissing her soft lips beneath the morning sun.

"For what?" she asked, smiling against his mouth.

"For looking into the garbage," Dante whispered, "and finding the man I was supposed to be."

Sophie held his hand tightly, her fingers interwoven with his, as the morning light washed over their home, their daughter, and their forever.
