Chapter 9 - The Sovereign’s Vow

That evening, the Grand Ballroom of the Lake Forest estate played host to the annual Cavallaro Foundation Gala.

Over three hundred guests—city officials, international business leaders, allied family heads, and community leaders—filled the hall beneath golden chandeliers and floral arches.

Rocco stood near the main entrance, wearing an immaculate tuxedo, supervising security with a sharp, watchful eye. But his expression was no longer tense; he smiled warmly as guests arrived, accepting congratulations on behalf of the family.

At the head table sat Dante and Sophie.

Don Bernardo stood at the center of the room, raising a glass of vintage red wine toward the couple.

"To Dante and Sophie Cavallaro," the old Don announced, his voice carrying clearly through the room. "May their strength remind us all that true power isn't measured by how many men you command, but by how fiercely you protect the light in the dark."

The room erupted into warm, genuine applause.

Dante stood up, holding Sophie’s hand, leading her out through the tall French doors onto the stone terrace overlooking the dark, peaceful gardens.

The cool night breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees. High above, the stars shone bright and clear in the cloudless Chicago sky.

Dante pulled Sophie into his arms, wrapping his silk suit jacket around her shoulders to shield her from the chill.

"Are you cold?" he asked softly.

"No," Sophie smiled, resting her hands against his chest. "I’ll never be cold again."

Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn leather-bound book—the small diary Sophie had kept during her first year as a maid in the penthouse, which Julian had confiscated and hidden six months ago. Dante had spent three months tracking it down through auction houses.

Sophie gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "My diary... you found it?"

"I read the entry from October 14th," Dante admitted, a soft, rare blush touching his high cheekbones. "The day you dropped the silver tea tray because I walked into the kitchen without my suit jacket."

Sophie laughed, her cheeks turning pink. "You scared me to death! You looked like a dark storm cloud!"

"Do you know what you wrote on that page?" Dante asked, taking her hand in his.

Sophie shook her head, smiling through her tears.

"You wrote," Dante whispered, leaning down to press his lips against her temple, "'The boss looks like he carries the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. I wish I could give him a reason to smile.'"

May you like

Sophie looked up into his dark, beautiful eyes, reaching up to gently trace the line of his jaw. "And did I?"

"Every single day of my life," Dante swore softly.
