Chapter 6 - The Council of Wolves

The Grand Council chamber of the Chicago Syndicate was located beneath an old opera house in the Loop—a vaulted stone room illuminated by iron chandeliers and guarded by thirty armed enforcers representing the seven major crime families of the Midwest.
At the center of the long oak table sat Don Bernardo—the eighty-year-old elder of the Syndicate, his hands resting on a gold-headed cane.
To his left stood Julian Cavallaro, supported by iron leg braces, his face pale and sunken. To his right stood Silas Vane, his arm bound in a sling, flanked by three high-priced criminal defense attorneys.
Dante Cavallaro walked into the chamber alone, wearing a double-breasted charcoal suit, his hands tucked into his pockets.
"Dante Cavallaro," Don Bernardo announced, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "You have called an emergency session of the Seven Families. You accuse your own blood brother and a senior captain of high treason against the Syndicate. Present your proof, or face the consequences of an unprovoked war."
Julian leaned forward against the table, his voice high and desperate. "Don Bernardo! My brother has lost his mind! He was seduced by a maid—a girl who stole a hundred thousand dollars! He tortured me and Silas to cover up his own financial negligence!"
The captains around the table murmured quietly, exchanging uncertain glances.
Dante didn't raise his voice. He didn't gesture wildly.
He pulled a black leather binder from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the center of the oak table.
"In that file," Dante said, his voice like iron sliding over stone, "are the bank records for three offshore accounts in Panama, co-signed by Julian Cavallaro and Silas Vane. Over the past two years, they have siphoned fourteen million dollars from the Syndicate’s joint port authority fund."
Silas Vane stood up, shouting, "Those documents are forged!"
"They aren't forged, Silas," a quiet, clear voice echoed from the rear entrance of the chamber.
The heavy oak doors opened.
Sophie Miller walked into the Council chamber.
She wore an elegant high-necked navy blue dress that covered her bandages, her hair styled in soft waves, walking slowly but steadily beside Rocco.
The entire chamber fell into dead silence.
Julian stared at her as if he were looking at a ghost returned from the grave. "You... you were supposed to be..."
"I was supposed to be dead in a trash bag behind Pier 9," Sophie said, stopping beside Dante, her posture straight, her chin raised high. She looked directly at Don Bernardo. "I am Sophie Miller. For six months, I was held captive in a meatpacking facility in Gary by Silas Vane's men under the direct orders of Julian Cavallaro."
She pulled back her high navy collar, revealing the edge of the healing burn mark on her neck and shoulder.
"They tortured me to obtain the secondary encryption keys to Dante Cavallaro’s private accounts," Sophie continued, her voice ringing clear through the stone vault. "Keys that I held because Dante trusted me to manage his private library archives. I refused to yield them."
Don Bernardo stood up slowly, leaning on his gold cane. His old eyes burned with a lethal, ancient fury as he looked at Julian and Silas.
"You branded a woman?" Bernardo whispered, his voice trembling with disgust. "You stole from the joint accounts and tried to frame an innocent girl?"
"Don Bernardo, please!" Julian screamed, falling to his knees on the stone floor. "It was Silas! He tricked me!"
"Enough," Don Bernardo commanded, raising his hand.
The old Don looked at Dante. "Dante Cavallaro. By the ancient laws of the Seven Families, the punishment for treason against blood and syndicate is forfeit of all rank, territory, and life. The Cavallaro family business is yours to cleanse."
Dante looked down at his brother kneeling in the dust.
"Rocco," Dante said softly.
May you like
"Boss?"
"Take Silas Vane and Julian to the docks," Dante commanded. "And give them the same ride they prepared for Sophie."
