Chapter 10 - The Promise on the Cliff
Late that evening, after the music had faded and the guests had departed, the fog cleared over Carmel-by-the-Sea, leaving a sky filled with millions of brilliant, burning stars.
Sarah and Julian walked hand in hand along the high wooden boardwalk above the beach, listening to the rhythmic, soothing crash of the waves against the shore.
A few steps ahead of them, Arthur walked slowly with Chloe, holding her tiny hand as they looked up at the constellations glowing above the water.
"Look, Grandpa Arthur!" Chloe pointed up at the sky. "That star looks like a sailboat!"
"Ah, that's the Mariner's Star, little bit," Arthur’s voice drifted back to them through the cool night air. "That's the star that guides fishermen safely back to shore when the fog gets too thick."
Julian stopped walking, wrapping his arms around Sarah from behind and pulling her close into his warmth.
Sarah leaned her head back against his shoulder, watching their daughter and Arthur walk together under the moonlight.
"Look at them," Sarah murmured softly, a deep, overwhelming peace resting in her heart. "Two years ago, I thought my life was over in that lobby."
Julian kissed the side of her temple, holding her hands tightly over her waist. "Two years ago, my life was just beginning."
He turned her in his arms, holding her face gently between his hands, his dark eyes reflecting the starlight and the endless blue of the ocean.
"I made a promise to my father when we found each other," Julian whispered lovingly to her. "And tonight, I make the same promise to you, Sarah."
"What promise?" Sarah asked softly.
"That no matter how thick the fog gets, no matter what storms come our way," Julian declared, his voice filled with absolute, everlasting devotion, "I will hold your hand, I will protect our family, and I will never let go."
