Chapter 8 - The Sunroom at Carmel

Six months later.

Autumn had arrived in Carmel-by-the-Sea, bringing crisp golden sunshine and clear blue skies over the Pacific Ocean.

The estate on the cliffs above Whispering Pines was a grand, sunlit craftsman home surrounded by tall pine trees and blooming coastal gardens. Julian had purchased the property three months earlier, creating a permanent sanctuary for his father, far away from corporate boardrooms and city noise.

In the spacious glass sunroom overlooking the ocean, six-year-old Chloe sat at a low wooden table, her face flushed with health and happiness. She was laughing loudly as Arthur Vance—dressed in a soft cashmere cardigan—showed her how to polish a freshly carved wooden sailboat with beeswax.

"See here, little bit?" Arthur’s voice was warm, clear, and steady. "You gotta rub with the grain of the wood. That's how you bring out the heart of the tree."

"Like this, Grandpa Arthur?" Chloe asked, using a soft cloth to polish the small wooden bow.

"Just like that," Arthur beamed, patting her hair.

Though Arthur's dementia still brought occasional foggy afternoons, living in the peace of the coastal estate with full-time medical care, proper nutrition, and the boundless joy of little Chloe had dramatically slowed his cognitive decline. He had good days—wonderful, clear days where he remembered every song, every carving technique, and every memory of his youth.

Sarah stood at the sunroom doorway, holding a tray of warm tea and fresh cinnamon scones.

She wore an elegant ivory linen dress, her dark hair pinned back, her skin glowing with health and confidence. As the General Manager of Whispering Pines, she had transformed the resort over the last six months. Under her leadership, staff retention had reached an all-time high, guest satisfaction scores soared, and she had established a foundation within the resort that provided emergency financial relief and healthcare funding for every hourly employee and their families.

Julian walked up behind Sarah, wrapping his arms gently around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"They've been working on that sailboat for two hours," Julian murmured into her ear, his deep voice filled with contentment.

Sarah leaned back against his warm, solid chest, covering his hands with hers. "Chloe told me this morning that Grandpa Arthur is the best master craftsman in the whole world."

Julian smiled, looking at his father and the little girl laughing together in the sunlight. "She's not wrong."

Julian turned Sarah around in his arms, looking deeply into her eyes. The cold, distant billionaire who had walked down the lobby stairs six months ago was completely gone, replaced by a man who laughed easily, loved deeply, and found joy in the simple rhythm of family life.

"I spoke with the board of directors in New York this morning," Julian shared softly.

"Oh?" Sarah asked, resting her hands on his chest. "Are they complaining about the new employee benefit budget again?"

"No," Julian chuckled, kissing her forehead. "They approved it without a single vote against it. But I told them I am officially stepping down as active CEO. I'm appointing an executive committee to handle the global properties so I can stay here in Carmel permanently."

Sarah looked at him, surprised. "You're giving up the daily control of your empire?"

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, simple ring featuring a clear, sea-green sapphire set in warm hand-hammered gold.

"My empire was empty until you walked into it, Sarah," Julian said, his voice trembling with profound emotion as he looked into her eyes. "You saved my father's life. You saved my soul. I don't want to run the world anymore. I just want to build a life with you and Chloe."

Sarah felt fresh, joyous tears spill down her cheeks. "Julian..."

"Sarah Harrison," Julian asked softly, slipping the ring onto her finger, "will you marry me?"

"Yes!" Chloe shouted from the table before Sarah could even answer, clapping her small hands happily. "Say yes, Mommy!"

Arthur chuckled loudly, nodding his head. "Say yes, girl! The boy carved that gold setting himself!"

May you like

Sarah laughed through her tears, wrapping her arms tightly around Julian’s neck and pressing her lips against his in a deep, passionate, magnificent kiss.

"Yes," Sarah whispered against his lips. "A thousand times yes."
