Chapter 6 - The Trap in the Lobby

At 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the lobby of Whispering Pines was quiet and bathed in the pale light of dawn.
Samuel Fletcher stood near the front desk, holding a leather clipboard. Beside him stood two men in light grey suits from the California Department of State Health Services, accompanied by two armed private security guards.
"Thank you for coming so promptly, gentlemen," Samuel said, his voice brimming with professional authority. "The individual in question is upstairs in the executive penthouse. He is severely unstable, delusional, and poses an immediate liability to our high-profile guests."
"Does Mr. Julian Vance approve of this transfer?" one of the state officials asked, adjusting his glasses.
"Mr. Vance is currently in an urgent virtual board meeting with our New York investors," Samuel lied smoothly. "He has delegated full authority regarding this matter to me. In fact, our house cleaning supervisor, Miss Harrison, will be down in a moment to provide a signed witness statement confirming the old man's violence."
Right on cue, the glass doors of the executive elevator opened.
Sarah Harrison walked out into the lobby. She wore her clean housekeeping uniform, her spine straight, her face expressionless. In her hand, she held a folded white sheet of paper.
Samuel smiled victoriously, stepping forward to meet her.
"Ah, Miss Harrison," Samuel said loudly so the state officials could hear. "Thank you for bringing the signed affidavit. Did you encounter any difficulty with the patient upstairs?"
Sarah stopped three feet from Samuel.
"No difficulty at all, Mr. Fletcher," Sarah said clearly, her voice echoing through the open lobby.
"Excellent," Samuel said, reaching out his hand for the paper. "Give it to me, and I will ensure your... incentive is processed immediately."
Sarah didn't hand him the paper. Instead, she unfolded it and read it aloud in a firm, steady voice that carried to every corner of the room.
"I, Sarah Harrison, hereby state under penalty of perjury that Samuel Fletcher, General Manager of Whispering Pines Resort, attempted to bribe me with five thousand dollars to sign a fraudulent mental incompetence document regarding Arthur Vance."
Samuel’s face froze. The smile vanished from his lips instantly. "What... what nonsense are you reading?!"
"Furthermore," Sarah continued loudly, "Samuel Fletcher threatened to terminate my employment, blackball my career, and orchestrate my eviction if I refused to cooperate in his attempt to illegally kidnap and institutionalize Arthur Vance."
"Shut up!" Samuel shrieked, his silver mustache twitching with rage as he lunged forward to snatch the paper from her hands. "Security, seize her! She's hysterical! She's fired!"
"Touch her, Samuel, and you won't leave this building in a suit."
The voice boomed from the executive elevator.
Julian Vance stepped out into the lobby.
He was not wearing his usual polished corporate suit. He wore a simple dark sweater, his dark eyes ablaze with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage that made every security guard in the lobby freeze in their tracks.
Walking slowly beside Julian, supported gently by Julian’s arm, was Arthur Vance. The old man was dressed in a clean wool coat, his hair combed, holding his wooden duck tightly in his right hand.
Samuel backed away, his hands trembling violently. "Mr. Vance! You... you don't understand! I was handling a delicate family situation for you! This maid is lying! She's trying to extort the resort!"
Julian walked straight up to Samuel, stopping inches from the general manager's pale, sweating face.
"Fifteen years ago," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously soft, "you stole my father's timber mill. You framed him for fraud. You sent him to prison, and you let my mother die in a public ward."
Samuel’s eyes went wide with pure, unadulterated terror. "Julian... no... that's ancient history... I was working for the bank..."
Julian pulled a thick legal dossier from under his arm and tossed it hard against Samuel’s chest.
"I called the Chief of the Monterey Police Department and the District Attorney an hour ago," Julian revealed, his jaw clenched like iron. "They have already executed a search warrant on your personal office and your home. They found the offshore accounts where you hid the liquidated assets from my father's business fifteen years ago."
Two marked Monterey Police cruisers pulled up outside the glass lobby doors, their red and blue lights flashing against the misty windows.
Four armed police officers marched into the lobby, handcuffs drawn.
"Samuel Fletcher," the lead detective announced, stepping up behind the general manager. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, bank fraud, witness intimidation, and corporate extortion."
As the metal cuffs clicked tightly around Samuel’s wrists, the disgraced general manager turned to Julian, his face twisted in desperate panic.

"Julian, please!" Samuel begged as officers dragged him toward the doors. "I built this resort for you! You need me!"
Julian didn't answer. He simply turned his back on Samuel, stepped beside his father, and watched the police car drive away into the fog.
