Chapter 4 - The Queens Sanctuary

An hour later, a sleek black Maybach pulled up outside a faded four-story apartment building in Jackson Heights, Queens.
Rain had begun to fall, slicking the neon signs of laundromats and late-night bodegas.
Inside the quiet apartment, Sophia’s mother, Elena, was sitting on the sofa wrapping her swollen hands in warm towels. Ten-year-old Mateo was sitting at the small kitchen table, doing his homework with an inhaler resting beside his notebook.
The door opened, and Sophia walked in, followed by the most famous billionaire bachelor in New York.
"Sophia?" Elena asked, standing up in confusion. "Why are you home early? And... who is this gentleman?"
"Mom, Mateo," Sophia said softly, taking off her rain-soaked coat. "This is Alexander Ashford. He... he used to know Dad."
Elena’s eyes widened. She recognized the Ashford name from the news, but when Alexander bowed his head deeply in traditional respect, her suspicion softened.
"Mrs. Reyes," Alexander said, his voice thick with emotion. "Your late husband saved my life six years ago. I spent years searching for you. Tonight, I finally found Sophia."
Mateo looked up from his homework, his big eyes darting between Alexander’s expensive suit and his sister’s tired face. "Are you a prince?"
Alexander chuckled softly, kneeling down so he was at eye level with the young boy. "No, buddy. But your sister is a warrior."
For the next two hours, over cups of hot chamomile tea poured into chipped porcelain mugs, Alexander explained everything—the confrontation in the ballroom, the canceled engagement, and the threat now posed by Senator Lane.
"Senator Lane controls half the police commissioners in the city," Alexander warned Elena gently. "He won't let this go. Victoria’s reputation was destroyed tonight, and Lane’s corporate investments are hanging by a thread. They will try to frame Sophia or use your family to force my hand."
Elena held her daughter's hand tightly. "We have survived poor, Mr. Ashford. We can survive a politician."
"You shouldn't have to survive them alone," Alexander said, turning to look into Sophia’s eyes. "I have a private estate in upstate New York— fortified, private, and secure. I want you, your mother, and Mateo to stay there until I dismantle Lane’s influence."
Sophia looked around her small, cozy home. She looked at her father’s old framed photograph on the wall—Miguel Reyes smiling in his work uniform.
"No," Sophia said softly.
Alexander blinked. "Sophia, it’s not safe here."

"My father taught me that running from a storm only makes you tired when the rain catches up to you," Sophia said, her voice filled with quiet steel. "If Senator Lane wants a fight, let him come to Queens. The Quiet Current doesn't hide in golden cages, Mr. Ashford."
Alexander stared at her, his admiration deepening into something profound and undeniable.
