Chapter 10 - A Perfect Morning

The morning sun over the Lombardy hills was spectacular, filling the sprawling Duca estate kitchen with a brilliant, golden warmth. The air smelled of fresh croissants, sweet oranges, polished marble, and rich, dark espresso.

Matteo, the head chef, stood behind the counter with a broad, happy smile. He poured a dark, steaming stream of espresso into a white porcelain cup, adding a perfect swirl of hazelnut crema. He didn't use a silver spoon to check it anymore—the estate was the safest place in Europe now.

Alessandro Duca sat at the large rustic wooden table in the center of the kitchen, dressed not in his corporate armor of a three-piece suit, but in a comfortable sweater and jeans. Beside him sat Sophia, laughing as she poured orange juice into three glasses.

Emma sat on a high chair between them, her gray rabbit tucked securely under her arm, her bare feet swinging happily beneath the table.

Matteo walked over, placing the hot cup of coffee directly in front of Alessandro.

The kitchen went momentarily quiet, a playful echo of the terrifying morning six months prior. Alessandro looked down at the coffee, then turned his gaze to the little girl beside him.

"Well, Emma?" Alessandro asked, a brilliant, genuine smile lighting up his handsome face. "Do I need to check it first today?"

Emma leaned forward, her tiny nose wrinkling as she took a deep, dramatic sniff of the steam rising from the porcelain cup. The entire kitchen staff held their breath, a wave of affectionate amusement passing through the room.

Emma looked up, her curious eyes bright with complete innocence and joy. She gave a firm, definitive nod.

"It smells perfect," Emma declared, hugging her rabbit tight. "It smells like vanilla and hot chocolate and... and love."

Alessandro laughed, a rich, deep sound that filled the grand stone room. He picked up the cup and took a long, peaceful sip of the perfect brew. The coffee was rich, dark, and sweet—completely free of poison, free of betrayal, and full of the promise of a long, beautiful future with the family he had fought so hard to protect.

The sun climbed higher into the Italian sky, burning away the last of the morning fog, leaving nothing but warmth and light over the house that a three-year-old girl had saved.
