Chapter 9 - Healing the Scars

Six months after the showdown at the San Siro quarry, the Duca estate had undergone a transformation. The shattered glass of the sunroom had been replaced with reinforced crystal, and the high steel security shutters remained open, letting the warm Italian summer breeze fill the grand rooms.
The Valora Tech laboratory had been completely restructured under Alessandro's direct supervision. The synthetic cardiac toxin research was permanently destroyed, replaced by a foundation dedicated to funding research into children's respiratory and olfactory health—named the Ricardo Alvarez Memorial Institute.
Alessandro sat in his study, the shoulder wound now nothing more than a neat silver scar beneath his linen shirt. He was looking over the legal adoption and guardianship paperwork spread across his desk.
A soft knock came at the door. Sophia entered, no longer wearing the gray housekeeping uniform. She wore a beautiful, simple emerald dress, her face full of color, her eyes carrying a peace that had been absent for years.
"You asked to see me, Alessandro?" she asked, her voice warm. Over the past months, the professional distance between the billionaire and the widow had slowly dissolved, replaced by a deep, unspoken bond forged in the fires of survival.
"Yes, Sophia," Alessandro said, standing up and handing her the documents. "These are the deeds to the villa on the southern coast of Capri. It’s a gift for you and Emma. Furthermore, I have established a permanent trust fund for Emma’s education and future. You will never have to work another day in your life."
Sophia looked at the papers, her breath catching in her throat. She looked up at him, her eyes shining with tears. "Alessandro... this is too much. We only did what anyone would do. We can't accept this."
"You saved my life, Sophia," Alessandro said softly, stepping closer and taking her hands in his. "If it weren't for Emma’s warning, I would be a name on a tombstone, and my company would be an instrument of terror under Beatrice’s control. You didn't just save a billionaire. You gave me a reason to be a human being again."
Emma burst into the room, her worn gray rabbit now sporting a miniature, custom-made Duca family ribbon around its neck. She ran straight to Alessandro, who caught her effortlessly, tossing her into the air until she giggled with pure delight.

"Look, Daddy's friend!" Emma pointed out the window. "The birds are singing!"
Alessandro looked at Sophia, a quiet, beautiful understanding passing between them. "Yes they are, Emma. And they’re going to keep singing."
