Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Family Tree

The private study of Alessandro Duca was a fortress of mahogany, leather, and bulletproof glass. While the rest of the sprawling estate was plunged into a chaotic security sweep, the study remained an oasis of cold, calculated silence.
Alessandro sat behind his desk, the tarnished silver spoon and the poisoned cup sitting inside a sealed glass biohazard box in the center of the blotter. Across from him sat his head of security, a towering man named Caleb whose face looked as though it had been carved out of granite. Sophia sat on the edge of a leather sofa in the corner, holding a sleeping Emma, who had finally succumbed to exhaustion.
"The compound is digitalis toxin mixed with a synthetic derivative," Caleb reported, reading from a tablet that received real-time data from their private laboratory down the hall. "It’s designed to look like a massive myocardial infarction. In an adult male of your workload and stress levels, the coroner wouldn't have thought twice. It would have been ruled a natural death."
Alessandro leaned back, his fingers interlaced. "Who had access to the kitchen this morning?"
"Matteo arrived at 5:00 AM. The grocer’s delivery arrived at 5:30 AM. The inner security perimeter was checked at 6:00 AM," Caleb replied. "But here is the problem, Boss. The coffee beans are kept in a vacuum-sealed canister that only you and Matteo have the combination for. The poison wasn't in the beans. It was introduced into the espresso machine’s water reservoir or directly into your specific cup before the coffee was poured."
"Which means it’s an inside job," Alessandro concluded, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, icy light. "Someone who knows my exact routine. Someone who knew I would take that cup to my study and die alone at my desk before the morning board meeting."
A soft knock interrupted them. The heavy oak door pushed open, and a man in a sharp blue suit entered. It was Valerio Duca, Alessandro’s younger cousin and the chief financial officer of the Duca empire. He looked disheveled, his tie loosened, his eyes wide with apparent anxiety.
"Alessandro! Madonna mia, I just heard the security team locked the gates," Valerio exclaimed, walking toward the desk. "They’re saying someone tried to poison you? In your own kitchen? This is madness! We have the shipping merger contract signing in three hours. The board is already panicking."
Alessandro watched his cousin closely. He noted the slight sweat on Valerio’s brow, the way his eyes flicked toward the sealed glass box containing the cup, and the subtle tremor in his left hand.
"The merger can wait, Valerio," Alessandro said coldly. "My life, however, cannot."
"Of course, of course," Valerio said quickly, wiping his face with a silk handkerchief. "But who would do this? The servants? We must dismiss them all immediately! They are a liability."
From the corner of the room, Sophia spoke up, her voice trembling but resolute. "It wasn't the servants, Signor Valerio. We love Signor Alessandro. He took us in when no one else would."

Valerio turned sharply, noticeing the housekeeper and the child for the first time. His expression hardened into a look of aristocratic disdain. "And who is this? Why is a maid present during a family crisis?"
"She is the reason I am still breathing, Valerio," Alessandro said, his tone dropping an octave, carrying a warning that made his cousin freeze. "And until I find out who bought the medicine that killed her husband and tried to kill me, no one in this family is beyond suspicion."
