Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Chalice

The wedding reception was held at the Grand Royal Hotel in Mayfair, a shimmering palace of crystal chandeliers, gold leafing, and champagne fountains. Four hundred of the nation's most powerful political and financial figures attended.
Jane navigated the room with astounding grace. Beside Leonard, she spoke to foreign ambassadors, industrial titans, and high-court judges. Her intelligence, sharp wit, and unshakeable calm captivated everyone she spoke to. The high society vixens who had come expecting a clueless housemaid were stunned to find a woman of immense dignity and quiet authority.
"She's remarkable," Lord Sterling, a senior member of the Whitcliffe board, remarked to Leonard as Jane conversed with a French diplomat in fluent French—a skill she had secretly taught herself using old library books in the Harrington attic. "Where on earth were the Harringtons hiding her?"
"They weren't hiding her," Leonard said coldly, watching Jane across the room. "They were trying to bury her. But they forgot she was a seed."
By midnight, the party was drawing to a close. Jane stepped away from the crowd to catch her breath, walking down a quiet, marble-lined hallway toward the VIP lounge.
As she passed a dimly lit alcove, a hand suddenly grabbed her wrist, pulling her violently behind a heavy velvet curtain!
Jane gasped, her reflexes kicking in. She drove her high heel down hard onto her assailant's foot!
"Agh! Damn it!"
A woman shrieked in pain. Jane spun around, her back against the marble wall, her hands raised in defense.
It was Beatrice Harrington.
Beatrice looked unhinged. Her expensive silk dress was rumpled, her golden hair coming loose from its pins, her eyes red and wide with hysterics.
"You little thief," Beatrice spat, her voice trembling with hatred. "You stole my life! That was supposed to be my wedding! My dress! My billionaire!"
"Beatrice," Jane said coldly, smoothing down her wedding dress. "You are drunk and trespassing. Leave before security removes you."
"Security?" Beatrice laughed bitterly, pulling a small silver flask from her clutch and taking a swig. "You think you're safe now? You think Leonard loves you? You stupid, naive little maid! Leonard doesn't love anyone! He bought you because you were cheap and easy to control! Do you know what he calls you behind closed doors? His 'transactional asset'!"
Jane’s heart constricted slightly, but she kept her voice dead pan. "Even if that were true, Beatrice, he still chose an 'asset' over you. That must sting terribly."
Beatrice’s face contorted in rage. She lunged forward, raising her hand to slash her sharp nails across Jane’s face!
Jane caught Beatrice’s wrist in mid-air. Sixteen years of manual labor, scrubbing floors, carrying heavy oak furniture, and lifting copper cauldrons had made Jane physically far stronger than the spoiled socialite. Jane squeezed Beatrice’s wrist until the girl gasped in pain.
"I am not the girl in the gray dress anymore, Beatrice," Jane whispered, her hazel eyes dangerous and cold. "If you ever lay a finger on me again, I will personally sign the eviction notice for your townhouse. Do you understand me?"
She shoved Beatrice backward. Beatrice stumbled, falling onto a velvet sofa, staring at Jane in utter shock and fear.
Jane turned on her heel and walked back into the ballroom, her head held high.
When she returned to Leonard’s side, he immediately noticed the subtle shift in her posture. "What happened?" he asked softly, his hand settling on the small of her back.

"Just clearing out some trash," Jane said serenely, taking a glass of champagne from a waiter’s tray. "Shall we go home, husband?"
Leonard looked at her, a dark, thrilled spark igniting in his gray eyes. "With pleasure, wife."
