Chapter 7 - The Winter Villa

Two days after the wedding, Leonard took Jane away from the prying eyes of London to his private estate in the Swiss Alps—a breathtaking chalet of glass, timber, and stone nestled high in the snow-capped mountains of St. Moritz.

The villa was entirely secluded, surrounded by pine forests weighed down with heavy white snow. Inside, massive floor-to-ceiling windows offered panoramic views of the frozen valley below, while crackling stone fireplaces kept the interior warm and cozy.

For the first three days, they lived in a strange, exhilarating peace.

There were no reporters, no board members, no vengeful relatives. They skied together in the mornings—Leonard was surprised to find Jane was a natural athlete—and spent their afternoons reading by the grand fireplace in the main hall.

Their dynamic had subtly shifted. They were no longer just business partners; a intense, electric pull was growing between them, an undeniable tension that filled every room they shared.

On the fourth night, a blizzard raged outside, howling through the pines and burying the chalet in soft drifts of snow.

Jane sat on a plush faux-fur rug near the fireplace, wearing a cozy oversized white cashmere sweater and leggings, sipping hot chocolate. Leonard sat nearby at his desk, reviewing documents on his laptop.

Jane watched him through her lashes. The soft orange firelight hit the hard angles of his jawline, highlighting his sharp cheekbones and dark hair. He had unbuttoned his shirt collar, looking relaxed and devastatingly attractive.

"Leonard?" Jane called softly.

"Hmm?" He looked up from his screen.

"Why didn't you ever marry before?" Jane asked. "Before the deadline with the trust, I mean. A man like you... you could have had anyone in the world."

Leonard closed his laptop slowly. He leaned back in his chair, staring into the flames.

"When I was twenty-four," Leonard began, his voice low, "I met a woman. Her name was Victoria. She was beautiful, charming, and seemed completely disinterested in my wealth. I thought I had found someone real. I was preparing to propose."

Jane felt a strange, uncomfortable pang in her chest. "What happened?"

"I discovered she was being paid by a rival hedge fund to leak my private trading documents," Leonard said bitterly. "She had been spying on me for eighteen months. Every word of affection, every tender moment... it was all a calculated performance for money."

Jane’s eyes softened with deep empathy. "I'm sorry, Leonard."

"After that, I closed the door," Leonard said, looking over at her. "I realized that in my world, people only love what you can do for them, or what you can buy for them. I decided I would never let anyone close enough to hurt me again. I built Blackwood, I built my company, and I built a wall around my heart."

Jane stood up from the rug and walked slowly over to his desk. She stood beside his chair, looking down at him.

"And then you met me," she said softly.

"And then I met you," Leonard agreed, rising from his chair to face her. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the curve of her jawline. "A woman who had every reason to be bitter, cruel, and broken... yet remained profoundly good. You didn't want my money, Jane. You just wanted to be seen."

"I see you, Leonard," Jane whispered, her breath catching as he stepped closer, his body heat wrapping around her. "I see the man behind the armor."

Leonard’s eyes darkened with raw desire. "Jane... our contract..."

"To hell with the contract," Jane murmured.

Leonard pulled her into his arms, his mouth coming down on hers in a deep, passionate kiss. Jane wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the heat exploding between them.

He lifted her easily into his arms, carrying her out of the library and up the grand timber staircase to the master suite.

That night, amidst the howling alpine blizzard, the transactional arrangement between Leonard Whitcliffe and Jane Mercer burned away in the heat of their passion, replaced by a deep, ferocious love that neither of them could ever undo.
