Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Strike

Their honeymoon was cut short two weeks later by an urgent phone call from London.
Julian Whitcliffe, working in secret with Margaret Harrington, had launched a hostile takeover attempt of Whitcliffe Holdings while Leonard was out of the country.
Using leaked internal documents—documents that could only have come from someone inside Blackwood Manor—Julian had convinced four major board members that Leonard was unstable, citing his sudden marriage to an "unvetted servant girl" as evidence of diminished mental capacity.
Leonard and Jane flew back to London on his private jet through a storm, arriving at Blackwood Manor at three in the morning.
The atmosphere in the mansion was grim.
"Who leaked the financial reports?" Leonard demanded, pacing the length of his grand study, his face dark with fury. "Only three people had access to the Q3 audit files!"
Mrs. Gable stood near the door, looking pale and deeply distressed. "Mr. Whitcliffe... security reviewed the internal CCTV footage from last week while you were in Switzerland."
"And?" Leonard barked.
Mrs. Gable looked at Jane with deep sorrow. "It was... it was Miss Jane’s personal maid, Sarah. But sir... Sarah was hired on the direct recommendation of the Harrington estate three months ago."
Jane’s eyes widened. "Margaret."
"Sarah was seen entering your private study with a flash drive four days ago," Mrs. Gable said softly. "She disappeared from the estate yesterday morning. Her quarters were cleaned out."
Leonard stopped pacing. He looked at Jane, his eyes cold and analytical.
For a terrifying second, Jane felt her heart sink. Does he think I was part of it? Does he think I am another Victoria?
"Leonard," Jane said, her voice trembling slightly. "I swear to you, I knew nothing of this."
Leonard walked over to her immediately. He took her face in both of his hands, his thumbs stroking her cheekbones. "I know, Jane. I know you didn't do this. I trust you with my life."
Jane let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, tears pricking her eyes.
"They think they have cornered us," Leonard said, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face. "They think because they called an emergency board meeting for nine o'clock tomorrow morning, they can strip me of my CEO title before I can respond."
"They forgot one thing," Jane said, her fear instantly vanishing, replaced by a cold, calculating brilliance.
Leonard looked at her. "What?"
"They think I am your weakness," Jane said, stepping back and looking at the corporate files on the desk. "They think I am just a scared maid who doesn't understand high finance. They are expecting you to come to the board meeting to defend yourself."
"I have to defend myself, Jane. It’s my company."
"No," Jane said, a dangerous sparkle in her hazel eyes. "You stay hidden. Let them think you are panicked. Let them walk into that boardroom thinking they have won."
Leonard raised an eyebrow, fascinated. "And who will face them?"
May you like
Jane smiled—a beautiful, fierce, terrifying smile.
"Your wife."
