Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a magnificent palette of gold, amber, and violet across the vast Texas sky.
The estate was quiet, save for the gentle rustle of autumn leaves in the evening breeze and Maya’s happy babbling as she played with her toys on the patio rug.
Alvin walked over, handing me a steaming cup of chamomile tea before leaning against the stone balustrade beside me.
"You know," Alvin said softly, gazing out over the sprawling green lawns that stretched as far as the eye could see. "When I bought this estate thirty years ago, I thought power was about acquiring land, building companies, and making sure nobody could ever touch you."
He turned his head, looking down at me with a warm, affectionate smile.
"I was wrong," Alvin continued. "True power isn't about the walls you build around yourself. It's about the people you protect, the love you nurture, and the strength to stand up when the world tries to freeze you out."
I leaned my head against his shoulder, feeling the familiar, reassuring warmth of his presence.
"You stood up for me, Dad," I whispered. "When I couldn't."
"I was just following your lead, sweetheart," Alvin replied, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head. "You're a Sterling. We don't break. We adapt, we endure, and we conquer."

I looked down at Maya, who had crawled over to my feet and was now hugging my ankle, babbling happily to her toy bear. I reached down, scooped her up into my arms, and held her tight against my chest, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of her heartbeat matching my own.
The past was behind us. The ice had melted away completely, leaving behind a spring that would never end, and an unbreakable horizon stretching out endlessly before us.
