Chapter 6 - Untangling the Web

The dismantling of Diego’s life happened with the ruthless, clockwork precision of a military campaign.

Within forty-eight hours of his arrest, federal investigators armed with the forensic data provided by my father’s legal team raided Diego’s downtown offices, seizing computers, hard drives, and financial ledgers. It turned out that Diego wasn't just attempting to steal my inheritance; he was drowning in massive, underground gambling debts that he had accumulated across private clubs in Houston and Las Vegas.

His mother, Brenna, attempted to flee the mountain retreat the morning after the incident, only to find her bank accounts frozen and her luxury vehicles impounded under civil asset forfeiture laws tied to the embezzlement scheme. Left with no money, no social standing, and zero legal representation willing to touch a sinking ship, she quickly folded, signing a full confession detailing how she and Diego had meticulously plotted to isolate me, manipulate my finances, and eventually force me into signing away my rights before engineering a "tragic accident."

Sitting in the sunlit solarium of my father’s Dallas estate two weeks later, wrapped in a comfortable cashmere throw with my swollen belly resting comfortably beneath my lap, I watched the morning news broadcast on the wall-mounted flat screen.

“...Federal authorities have indicted former corporate executive Diego Vance on multiple counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, domestic abuse, and attempted capital murder,” the anchor reported, showing footage of Diego being led out of a federal courthouse in handcuffs, his face shielded by a designer jacket. “Legal analysts predict a minimum sentence of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole...”

I clicked the remote, turning the television off. The screen went black, reflecting the peaceful, sunlit garden outside.

"They're seizing his mother's townhouse in the historic district, too," Alvin noted, walking into the solarium carrying a tray with two cups of herbal tea and a plate of fresh pastries. He set the tray down on the marble table and sat across from me, a warm, proud smile touching his eyes. "Turns out every asset she owned was purchased using diverted dividends from the Sterling subsidiaries. Karma has a remarkably efficient accounting department."

I smiled, taking a sip of the warm tea. "I still can't believe it's all over. For so long, I thought I was trapped in a cage of my own making because I wanted to believe the man I married actually cared about me."

"You wanted to see the best in people," Alvin corrected gently. "That isn't a weakness, Elena. It’s a strength. But next time, let your old man run a background check that goes a little deeper than Ivy League degrees and tailored suits."

I laughed, setting my teacup down and resting both hands on my stomach as the baby gave a happy, rhythmic kick. "Deal."
