Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Spring arrived in Texas with a brilliant explosion of bluebonnets across the rolling hills, painting the landscape in vibrant shades of sapphire and green.
The dark, suffocating months of my marriage to Diego felt like a distant, half-forgotten nightmare. My focus had shifted entirely toward the future—toward the nursery we were building in the east wing of my father’s estate, painted in soft, calming tones of cream and sage green, and filled with handcrafted wooden furniture that Alvin had personally commissioned.
Without the constant psychological terror of walking on eggshells, my health flourished. The high-risk complications stabilized completely, much to the relief of our team of pediatric specialists.
One afternoon, while organizing a stack of children’s books on the freshly assembled bookshelf, Alvin walked into the nursery, holding a thick, leather-bound portfolio under his arm.
"Got a minute for a little corporate housekeeping?" he asked with a faint, knowing grin.
I turned around, wiping a speck of dust from my hands. "Depends. Are you trying to make me CEO of Sterling Global while I’m six weeks away from giving birth?"
"Not CEO yet," Alvin joked, walking over and placing the portfolio on the rocking chair. "But I am restructuring the primary equity distribution. Under the new corporate charter, all voting shares previously tied to the marital trust are being dissolved and re-issued directly into an irrevocable trust bearing your name—and your child's name."
I paused, looking down at the legal documents. "Dad... you don't have to do that."
May you like
"I'm not doing it for the company, Elena. I'm doing it for you," Alvin said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unwavering seriousness. "When I lost your mother, I buried myself in work, believing that providing financial security was the same as being a father. I let people like Diego into your life because I wasn't paying close enough attention. That’s never happening again. You and this baby are the only legacy that matters to me."
Moved by his words, I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his shoulders, burying my face against his chest. He held me tight, his strong arms providing the exact kind of unconditional safety I had desperately craved for years.
