Chapter 10 - The Horizon of the King and the Queen

The sun began to dip below the horizon that evening, casting a long, golden-amber glow over the quiet cliffs of the Russo estate. The stormy, gray waves of Lake Michigan had turned into a calm, glittering mirror of silver and blue, reflecting the peaceful serenity of the changing seasons.

The sprawling mansion was filled with a warm, joyful energy. A small, private dinner had been prepared to celebrate the opening of the trauma center. Leo was there, laughing and sharing a drink with Marcus Vance, the two men who had once been on opposite sides of the city now bound by a deep, unbreakable respect. Dr. Ellen Rossi was sitting on the patio, enjoying the crisp evening breeze.

Claire walked out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking the lake, holding a glass of apple cider. She took a deep breath of the fresh, pine-scented air, her mind feeling lighter than it ever had in her life. The fears, the hiding, the legal battles, and the shadows of the underworld had completely evaporated, replaced by a profound, victorious peace.

A pair of strong arms gently wrapped around her waist from behind. Nicholas leaned down, burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet scent of her hair.

"The guests are asking for the chief medical officer," Nicholas murmured, his voice a low, warm vibration against her skin.

Claire turned around in his embrace, resting her hands against the lapels of his suit jacket. "The chief medical officer is currently off duty, Mr. Russo. She’s enjoying the view."

Nicholas smiled, his dark eyes burning with a deep, magnetic intensity that still made her breath hitch every time he looked at her. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, elegant velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by brilliant, tiny diamonds—the exact color of the dress she had worn the night they reclaimed the city.

"Claire," Nicholas said, his voice dropping into a rare, solemn register that vibrated with absolute sincerity. "Seven months ago, I was a man who thought he owned everything, but I was dying alone in the dark. You gave me my breath. You gave me a future. And more importantly, you showed me what it means to be truly brave. I don't want to rule this city alone anymore. I want you by my side. Permanently. As my wife."

Claire looked from the glittering ring to the face of the man who had protected her with his entire empire. She didn't see a mob boss. She didn't see a billionaire tycoon. She saw Nicholas—the man who had trusted her enough to live.

"Yes, Nicholas," Claire whispered, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes. A thousand times yes."

Nicholas slid the ring onto her finger, its emerald green stone catching the final, brilliant rays of the setting sun. He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate, and tender kiss that sealed their fates together forever.

The music from the house drifted out over the terrace, blending with the gentle, rhythmic lapping of the lake waves against the cliffs below. The King of Chicago had finally found his Queen—not a woman born of high-society royalty, but a brave nurse who had looked into the dark, defied the world, and chosen to save a life. And together, standing on the edge of a new, bright horizon, they knew that their sanctuary would stand unbroken against any storm the world could bring.
