Chapter 7 - The Gathering of the Underworld

Over the next two weeks, the Russo estate became the nerve center for a silent, lethal corporate war. While Claire supervised Nicholas's recovery, ensuring his wound healed without infection and his strength returned, Nicholas spent his days surrounded by his inner circle, his satellite phones buzzing with encrypted data from across the globe.

The news from the city was bleak. Dr. Caldwell had officially filed a federal kidnapping report against Claire, labeling her a dangerous criminal who had conspired with an unknown entity to abduct Nicholas Russo. The Marcone family, believing Nicholas was dead or mortally wounded, had begun launching violent takeovers of the shipping docks and the union offices.

But Nicholas was playing a long, patient game.

"They think I’m a ghost," Nicholas chuckled one evening, sitting in a leather armchair in his study, wearing a dark silk robe. Claire was standing beside him, checking his blood pressure. "And a ghost is the most dangerous enemy you can have, Claire. Because a ghost can watch you without you ever knowing."

"Your blood pressure is one hundred and twenty over eighty, Nicholas," Claire said, a genuine smile breaking across her face as she rolled up the cuff. "You are officially out of the woods. The stitches are fully healed."

Nicholas reached up, his hand gently wrapping around hers, preventing her from stepping away. His fingers were warm, his grip carrying a magnetic, heavy intensity that made Claire’s heart skip a beat.

"Thank you, Claire," he said softly, his dark eyes staring directly into her soul. "I’ve had a hundred men swear loyalty to me because of my money or my power. But you gave me my life when I had nothing to offer you but a bloody wrist. I don't forget debts like that."

Before Claire could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open. Marcus Vance walked in, his face tight with a dangerous, icy satisfaction.

"Nicholas. The trap is set," Marcus said, sliding a tablet across the desk. "The Marcone family has called a secret assembly of all five major families at the old opera house downtown for tomorrow night. They are planning to officially announce your death and divide your territory. Dr. Caldwell is scheduled to attend to provide the 'medical confirmation' of your demise."

Nicholas’s eyes flashed with a terrifying, predatory brilliance. He stood up from his chair, his tall, powerful frame radiating absolute command. The King of Chicago was officially back.

"Perfect," Nicholas whispered, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face. "Get the suits ready, Marcus. And get the cameras. Tomorrow night, we are going to attend a funeral. But it won't be mine."

He turned to Claire, his expression softening into an undeniable tenderness. "Claire, I want you to come with me. I want you to see the ending of the story you started in that trauma bay."

"Nicholas, it's dangerous," Claire said, her heart pounding.

"You performed vascular surgery by a flashlight in a dark basement, sweetheart," Nicholas smiled, his hand gently stroking her cheek. "A room full of politicians and mobsters in suits is nothing compared to you. Come with me. Let’s finish this."
