Chapter 6 - The Fortress in the Woods

The drive lasted for nearly two hours, heading north away from the city center, deep into the secluded, heavily forested bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. Claire sat in a plush leather seat inside the sprinter van, monitoring Nicholas's IV lines while Marcus Vance watched her with an expression that shifted between deep suspicion and immense gratitude.
"You're a brave woman, Nurse Jenkins," Marcus said, his deep voice filling the quiet cabin. "Most people who cross Dr. Caldwell end up in a ditch. You crossed him and saved the boss."
"I did what any decent nurse would do," Claire said, her eyes locked on the cardiac monitor. "But my resident, Dr. Vance... Leo. He helped me. He’s still at the hospital. If Caldwell figures out he was involved, Leo’s life is in danger."
Nicholas opened his eyes from the gurney, his face tired but alert. "Marcus. Have the boys pull Dr. Vance out of that hospital tonight. Offer him a position at our private clinic in the city. Pay off his student loans. Every single cent. He is one of us now."
"Consider it done, boss," Marcus nodded.
The van finally slowed down, navigating through a massive, wrought-iron security gate hidden behind thick pine trees. It pulled up to the entrance of a stunning, sprawling architectural fortress built of glass, stone, and steel. This was the Russo estate—a heavily guarded compound fitted with its own private satellite communications, a security force that could rival a small army, and a state-of-the-art medical suite on the lower level.
Within ten minutes, Nicholas was transferred into a pristine, white medical room that looked better than the VIP wing of Chicago General. A private physician, Dr. Ellen Rossi—a trusted ally of the Russo family—was already waiting, her face full of relief as she checked Leo’s stitches.
"This is incredible work, Claire," Dr. Rossi said, looking at the surgical records Claire had scrawled on a piece of paper. "The mesenteric repair is flawless. You and your resident saved his life under third-world conditions."
"She stays here," Nicholas commanded from the bed, his voice weak but unyielding. "She is the chief medical officer of this compound now. Nobody enters this room without her permission. Not even you, Ellen."
Dr. Rossi smiled, bowing her head slightly. "Understood, Nicholas."
Once the medical team stepped out to let him rest, Claire walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out at the gray, stormy waves of Lake Michigan crashing against the cliffs below. She was safe, but her entire world had been turned upside down. She was now residing in the fortress of the most notorious mafia don in the Midwest.
Suddenly, she felt a presence behind her. Nicholas had adjusted his bed, propping himself up on the pillows, his dark eyes watching her silhouette against the window.
"You're thinking about what you lost," Nicholas said softly, his voice carrying a strange, unexpected warmth.

Claire turned to look at him. "I spent seven years building my career, Nicholas. I loved my patients. I loved the rhythm of the ER. Now, I'm a fugitive from the law because I saved you."
"The law in Chicago doesn't exist, Claire. It’s just a weapon used by whoever pays the highest price," Nicholas said, his jaw tightening. "Caldwell thought he could use it to destroy me. But he forgot that I don't play by the rules. You didn't lose your career, Claire. You just changed your clientele. From now on, you protect the King. And in return, the King protects you with everything he has."
