Chapter 6 - The Blood Money Network

By 3:00 AM, the rain had turned into a thick, misty fog that clung to the pine trees around the caretaker’s lodge.

Inside, the warm yellow light of the lantern illuminated dozens of documents I had pulled from Clara’s hidden filing safe beneath the floorboards.

Marcus Vance was on speakerphone, his voice crackling through the small speaker as he cross-referenced the file numbers with federal court databases in Washington D.C.

"It’s bigger than we thought, Penelope," Marcus said, the sound of his frantic typing audible over the line. "Clara didn't just find embezzlement. She found out that Wheeler Construction was intentionally using sub-standard concrete and compromised steel rebar on six state highway bridges and three public hospital foundations built over the last decade."

My jaw dropped. "They compromised public safety infrastructure to pocket the difference?"

"They skimmed over eighty million dollars from state construction budgets," Marcus confirmed, his tone laced with deep disgust. "Helen used that money to pay off state inspectors, buy judicial appointments, and fund her political action committees. Clara was going to blow the whistle on the entire operation two days before she was admitted to Helen’s private hospital."

Toby sat on an overturned wooden crate, wrapped in a thick wool blanket I had found in the closet, sipping hot water from a rusty kettle. "Is Grandmother going to jail, Uncle Marcus?"

The line went quiet for a moment. Marcus had never heard his nephew’s voice so clearly before.

"Yes, Toby," Marcus said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I give you my word. She is going away for a very long time. For what she did to your mother... and for what she did to you."

Suddenly, the lantern light flickered and died.

The cabin went dark. Outside, the steady hum of a heavy vehicle engine approached through the woods, grinding over gravel and breaking fallen branches.

I crept over to the small window, peeling back the dusty curtain.

Two black SUVs had parked in the clearing fifty yards away, their headlights blinding through the fog. Out stepped four men in dark suits, followed by Helen Wheeler herself, shielded from the light rain by a massive black umbrella held by her personal chauffeur.

Beside Helen stood the Chief of Police for Oakhaven—Chief Thomas—wearing his full dress uniform and sidearm.

"Penelope Vance!" Chief Thomas’s voice boomed through a bullhorn, echoing through the dark forest. "This is the Oakhaven Police Department! You are currently harboring a runaway minor on private property! Step out of the cabin with your hands visible!"

Toby grabbed my arm, trembling violently. "They brought the police..."

"Don't worry," I whispered, pulling him into the cellar hatch behind the workbench. "Chief Thomas isn't here to enforce the law. He's here to destroy the evidence."

I leaned down to Toby’s ear. "Hide down here in the dark. Do not come out no matter what you hear. Do you understand me?"

"What about you?" Toby cried softly.

"I'm going to buy Marcus enough time to get the federal marshals here," I said, kissing his forehead and sliding the heavy wooden hatch shut over his head.

I stood up, smoothed down my mud-stained wedding dress, picked up a heavy iron fireplace poker from the hearth, and unlocked the front door.
