Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Fog

I stepped out onto the cabin porch, the cold wind whipping my damp hair across my face.

The bright halogen headlights of the police cruisers blinded me, but I stood tall, holding the iron poker at my side like a sword.

Helen Wheeler stepped forward, her walking stick sinking slightly into the wet earth. A victorious, sinister smile stretched across her withered face.

"How pathetic you look, Penelope," Helen said, her voice dripping with aristocratic condescension. "A mud-stained bride holding a fireplace poker. Did you really think you could play the hero in my town?"

Chief Thomas unholstered his weapon, resting it against his hip. "Mrs. Wheeler, step back. Penelope, you are under arrest for trespassing, corporate espionage, and child endangerment. Drop the weapon."

"On whose authority, Chief Thomas?" I yelled back, my voice echoing through the misty trees. "On the authority of the fifty thousand dollars Helen Wheeler deposited into your offshore account in the Cayman Islands last month?"

Chief Thomas froze, his eyes widening in shock.

"Or perhaps," I continued, taking a step down the porch stairs, "on the authority of the fraudulent inspection certificates you signed for the Interstate 95 bridge project—the one built with cracked concrete supplied by Wheeler Construction?"

Helen’s smile vanished instantly. She shot a furious glare at Chief Thomas. "Silence her! She is rambling incoherently! Search the cabin and retrieve the boy!"

"He’s not in the cabin, Helen!" I lied loudly, taking another step forward to draw their attention away from the cellar hatch. "Toby is already on his way to the FBI regional field office in Denver! Along with Clara’s complete autopsy file!"

Chief Thomas went pale, looking frantically at Helen. "Mrs. Wheeler... you said she didn't have the medical files! You said Clara’s records were incinerated!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Helen snapped, striking the ground with her walking stick. "She’s bluffing! Break down that door!"

Two officers lunged toward the porch stairs.

I raised the iron poker, swinging it violently through the air, forcing the first officer to jump back onto the mud. But the second officer tackled me from the side, knocking the weapon from my hand and slamming me onto the cold stone steps.

Pain exploded through my shoulder as my cheek pressed against the wet rock.

"Hold her down!" Chief Thomas ordered, stepping onto the porch with a pair of steel handcuffs. "We’ll handle the boy inside!"

Just as the steel cuffs clicked around my right wrist, a blinding wall of blue and red lights erupted through the tree line behind the police cruisers.

Screeching tires tore through the gravel as six unmarked black suburban utility vehicles slammed to a halt in a tactical semi-circle, completely blocking Helen’s escape route.

Dozens of heavily armed officers in dark green tactical vests marked FBI spilled out into the clearing, their assault rifles raised and illuminated by tactical flashlights.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!" a voice roared through a heavy speaker system. "CHIEF THOMAS, STEP AWAY FROM THE SUSPECT AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!"
