Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Dynasty

The clearing exploded into total chaos.
Chief Thomas dropped his firearm into the mud instantly, throwing his hands high into the air, his face completely drained of color. The two officers pinning me down scrambled backward, dropping to their knees with their hands behind their heads.
Helen Wheeler stood alone in the center of the clearing, surrounded by federal agents, her silver walking stick slipping from her gloved fingers and falling into the mud.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark trench coat stepped past the tactical vehicles, accompanied by Marcus Vance.
"Penelope!" Marcus shouted, running toward the porch and helping me up off the cold stone steps. "Are you alright?!"
"I'm fine," I gasped, wincing as he unclipped the single handcuff from my wrist. "Toby is in the cellar! He’s safe!"
Marcus ran into the cabin, shouting his nephew’s name, while the trench-coated man approached Helen Wheeler. He pulled an official gold badge and a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his coat pocket.
"Helen Wheeler," Special Agent Miller said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, public corruption, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Clara Vance-Wheeler."
Helen stared at the agent, her body shaking—not with fear, but with an overwhelming, demonic rage.
"Do you know who I am?!" Helen shrieked, her voice cracking like glass. "I am Helen Wheeler! I built this city! I built the roads you drive on! You cannot touch me!"
"Your roads are crumbling, Mrs. Wheeler," Agent Miller replied coldly, gesturing for two female federal agents to step forward. "And so is your foundation."
As the steel cuffs snapped shut around Helen’s wrists, a black sedan pulled up to the edge of the clearing.
Conrad stepped out of the rear seat. His face was bruised from his fight with the security guards, his suit ruined, but he walked with a steady, resolute posture he had never possessed before.
Helen looked at her son, her eyes pleading for help for the first time in her life. "Conrad! Call the governor! Call our legal counsel! Tell these animals who we are!"
Conrad walked past his mother without saying a word. He stopped in front of me, his eyes filled with immense shame and quiet gratitude.
"I gave the FBI full access to the corporate servers an hour ago, Penelope," Conrad said softly, his voice trembling. "I signed a full confession regarding the financial skimming. I’m going to prison... but Toby won't ever have to live in fear again."

"Conrad! You traitorous coward!" Helen screamed as the agents loaded her into the back of an armored transport vehicle. "I gave you everything! You are nothing without me! Nothing!"
Conrad didn't turn around. He watched the black vehicle drive away into the foggy night, taking forty years of cruelty and corruption with it into the dark.
