Chapter 4 - The Gala on the Mississippi

The New Orleans Municipal Development Gala was held aboard the Grand Crescent, a massive three-deck riverboat anchored along the Mississippi River. The event was designed to seal the deal: a celebration where the mayor and city council would officially announce Mercer Urban Holdings as the recipient of the forty-million-dollar port grant.
Adrian Mercer walked the red carpet in a tailored tuxedo, clutching a champagne flute, with Sloane Whitmore by his side. Sloane wore a gold satin gown—a design directly ripped from page fourteen of Evelyn's notebook.
"Look at the press, Adrian," Sloane purred, smiling for a cluster of photographers. "We’ve won. Once this contract signs tonight, we expand into Europe."
"Did the investigator call back?" Adrian whispered nervously, scanning the crowd of politicians, investors, and elite guests.
"Forget Evelyn!" Sloane snapped under her breath. "She's probably back in Cleveland sewing alterations for twenty dollars an hour. She's nobody."
At 9:00 PM, the riverboat pushed off from the dock, cruising slowly along the dark water under a canopy of stars.
In the grand ballroom, the Mayor of New Orleans took the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we crown a new era of sustainable commerce for our city. Please welcome the visionary creative force behind Mercer Renewal—Miss Sloane Whitmore!"
Applause filled the room. Sloane stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone with a triumphant grin.
Suddenly, the ballroom lights dimmed to pitch black.
Gasps rippled through the audience. Adrian reached for his security guard's shoulder. "What's going on? Get the generator on!"
Instead of the house lights returning, two brilliant white spotlights pierced the darkness, focusing entirely on the grand staircase descending from the upper deck.

The deep, resonant voice of Dominic Vale echoed through the ballroom's sound system.
"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the true launch of sustainable fashion."
