Chapter 2 - The Audit of Shadows

By 8:30 PM, Liam was sound asleep in his bed, his arm wrapped around his favorite stuffed bear.

In the sunburnt-oak study of his suburban estate, Owen sat behind a desk cluttered with financial reports, architectural blueprints for Marsh Dynamics’ new clean-energy plant, and a single half-empty cup of black coffee.

He picked up his personal phone and dialed a private number.

"Marsh," a low, rasping voice answered on the second ring.

"Marcus," Owen said. "I need a private background verification. Off the grid. No corporate billing, no digital trail."

Marcus Vance was a former FBI intelligence analyst who had served as Marsh Dynamics’ Chief of Global Security for eight years. He was the man Owen called when a foreign competitor tried to steal trade secrets or when a board member was suspected of insider trading.

"Name?" Marcus asked cleanly.

"Sarah. Last name unknown. Has a daughter named Lily, roughly six years old. They were at The Rusty Fork diner on 4th Street around 6:00 PM today. She was catching the 6:15 bus heading south toward the Hilltop district."

"What's the context, Owen? Kidnapping risk? Corporate espionage?"

"Human kindness," Owen replied smoothly. "She’s terrified, Marcus. She flinched when I picked up a crayon. She carried herself like an educated woman who suddenly vanished off the map. I want to make sure she’s safe, and I want to know who made her so afraid."

"Give me three hours," Marcus said.

Owen hung up, resting his chin on his hands, staring out at the dark trees swaying in the rain.

Fifteen years ago, Owen had built Marsh Dynamics from a two-man engineering garage into a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure power. He had negotiated contracts with heads of state, exposed corrupt senators, and crushed hostile takeovers without blinking. But watching that young mother carefully divide a eight-dollar hamburger in half so her daughter could eat fries had shaken him deeper than any board dispute ever had.

At 11:45 PM, his phone screen lit up with an encrypted email attachment.

Owen opened the file.

SUBJECT IDENTIFICATION: Sarah Elizabeth Sterling (née Vance). AGE: 31. EDUCATION: Master’s in Structural Engineering, Ohio State University. FORMER EMPLOYMENT: Senior Project Auditor, Vance-Crown Construction. CURRENT STATUS: Missing / Unregistered Domestic Violence Shelter Resident.

Owen’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the rapid-fire paragraphs compiled by Marcus's team.

Sarah had been married to Richard Crown—the playboy heir to Crown Construction, one of the most ruthless commercial developers in the Midwest. Three years ago, while conducting a routine structural audit on a multi-million-dollar municipal bridge project funded by Crown Construction, Sarah had discovered evidence of massive illegal material substitution: low-grade, dangerous steel rebar being passed off as federal-grade material.

When she refused to sign off on the falsified safety certificates, her husband had turned violent. He had used his family’s immense wealth, legal team, and connections within the local precinct to isolate her, seize her personal bank accounts, frame her for corporate embezzlement, and file for sole custody of Lily.

Sarah had taken her daughter and vanished into the underground network of women's shelters sixteen months ago.

At the bottom of the page, Marcus had added a handwritten note: Richard Crown hired private investigators three weeks ago to hunt her down. He has a high-priced legal team standing by to file emergency kidnapping charges the moment her location is confirmed.

Owen slowly closed the laptop screen.

May you like

His jaw tightened until the muscles thudded against his skin.

"Richard Crown," Owen whispered to the empty, quiet room. "You picked the wrong city to hunt in."
