Chapter 5 - The Gala of Shadows

Three weeks later, the annual Columbus Business Leadership Gala was held at the historic Palace Theatre.

The event was the grandest night on the city's corporate calendar—a black-tie gathering of CEOs, senators, developers, and city council members.

Owen arrived in a tailored black tuxedo, carrying Liam on his hip for the red-carpet photos before sending the boy back home with his long-time nanny. Beside Owen walked Sarah.

She wore a breathtaking, floor-length sapphire-blue silk gown, her dark hair swept up in an elegant twist, a modest diamond necklace resting against her collarbone. She looked royal, radiant, and completely transformed.

As they stepped into the grand ballroom, surrounded by towering crystal chandeliers and champagne servers, the room filled with the soft murmur of string quartet music.

"Are you nervous?" Owen asked, leaning down to speak near her ear as he offered her his arm.

"A little," Sarah admitted, her hand resting gracefully on his sleeve. "I used to attend these parties as Richard’s quiet trophy wife. I sat in the corner and kept my mouth shut while he made deals."

"Tonight," Owen said, looking around the room, "you’re here as the Chief Auditor of the biggest infrastructure project in the state. You don't sit in corners anymore."

Before Sarah could reply, the heavy double doors at the main entrance opened.

A tall, handsome man in his late thirties stepped into the ballroom, flanked by two private bodyguards and a city councilman. He wore a white gold watch and smiled with the polished, predatory charm of a man who believed money could buy any silence.

Richard Crown.

Sarah’s body instantly went rigid. Her grip on Owen’s arm tightened so hard her knuckles turned white.

Richard took a champagne flute from a tray, scanned the crowd, and then his eyes locked directly onto Sarah.

His smile vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, dark shock, followed quickly by a slow, malicious grin.

Richard handed his champagne glass to a bodyguard and walked straight across the ballroom toward them, his leather shoes clicking loudly against the hardwood floor.

"Well, well, well," Richard said, stopping three feet away, his eyes raking over Sarah’s sapphire dress before settling on Owen. "I wondered where my runaway wife had slithered off to. And it seems she managed to crawl all the way up to Owen Marsh’s elbow."

The surrounding guests began to turn, whispering among themselves as the tension in the room spiked instantly.

Owen didn't back down. He stepped half an inch forward, placing himself subtly between Sarah and Richard.

"Mr. Crown," Owen said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, icy calm that had crushed rival corporations in three continents. "You're interrupting our conversation."

"She’s my wife, Marsh!" Richard hissed, stepping closer, his face twisting with arrogant rage. "She stole my daughter! She fled an active corporate fraud investigation at Crown Construction! You’re harboring a fugitive!"

Sarah took a deep breath. She stepped out from behind Owen, standing side-by-side with him, looking Richard straight in the eye without a single tremble in her frame.

"I didn't steal Lily, Richard," Sarah said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent circle of gathered executives. "I saved her from a man who uses violence when his contracts fail. And as for corporate fraud... I suggest you check the news tomorrow morning."

Richard frowned, his arrogance faltering for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"

Owen pulled his phone from his tuxedo pocket and held the screen up for Richard to see.

"Twenty minutes ago," Owen announced smoothly, "Marsh Dynamics submitted Sarah’s structural audit of the Scioto River Bridge to the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Federal agents are currently serving search warrants on your corporate headquarters in Upper Arlington."

Richard’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. "You... you can't do this! I have judges on my board! I have—"

"You have ten minutes before the FBI arrives at this ballroom with an arrest warrant for federal infrastructure fraud and witness intimidation," Owen said quietly, looking down at his watch. "I'd suggest you spend them calling your lawyers."

Two security guards from the Palace Theatre—retrainers hired directly by Marcus Vance—stepped up behind Richard, placing their hands on their holsters.

Richard stared at Sarah with pure hatred, then looked at Owen, realizing he was completely outmaneuvered. He turned on his heel and rushed out of the ballroom, his bodyguards hurrying behind him.

The crowd of executives broke into quiet, astonished whispers.

Sarah let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for three years. She looked up at Owen, her eyes shining with tears of relief.

May you like

"He's finally going to stop," she whispered.

Owen smiled softly, offering her his arm again. "He’s never going to touch your life again, Sarah. Now, let's get some champagne."
