Chapter 9 - The House on the Hill

By mid-summer, Owen’s suburban estate had undergone a massive, joyful transformation.

The quiet, museum-like silence that had defined the house for five years was completely gone. In its place was the constant, beautiful noise of a thriving family.

The backyard now featured a giant wooden treehouse built personally by Owen and Liam, complete with rope ladders, a green slide, and a yellow flag flying from the roof.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the family held a quiet, private wedding ceremony in the garden under a massive, blooming magnolia tree.

There were no press cameras, no corporate executives, and no political guests.

Only Sister Mary from the shelter, Marcus Vance, the nanny, and the two children.

Sarah wore a simple, elegant ivory lace dress, her hair flowing down her back in loose waves. Owen wore a classic dark suit with a white magnolia blossom pinned to his lapel.

Liam served as the best man, holding the silver ring box with extreme pride, while Lily was the flower girl, wearing a pink dress and recklessly scattering rose petals across the grass.

As the minister declared them husband and wife, Owen pulled Sarah into his arms and kissed his bride under the warm summer sun.

"Yay!" Lily cheered, jumping up and down. "Now we're officially a team!"

"We were always a team, silly," Liam said, putting his arm around Lily’s shoulders. "Now we just have the same last name."

After the ceremony, as the sun began to set, casting long golden light across the lawn, the small family sat together at a long wooden dining table set up under the shade of the magnolia tree.

A large, delicious catered dinner was laid out—grilled chicken, fresh summer salads, roasted potatoes, and a giant chocolate cake.

Lily looked around the table, her small face glowing with pure happiness. She picked up a box of crayons that Liam had left on the bench and pulled a fresh white paper napkin from her lap.

She began to draw.
