Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Basement

The heavy metal side door of the warehouse yielded with a familiar, metallic groan as Claire pushed it open.

Inside, the cavernous space smelled of damp concrete, rust, and old dust. The moonlight filtering through the high, grimy factory windows cast long, eerie shadows across the rows of skeletal industrial sewing machines and covered cutting tables.

Claire walked with absolute silence, her leather-soled boots making no sound against the concrete floor, closely followed by Daniel with his hand resting near his side.

They reached the back corner, near the old administrative office where Margaret Bennett’s wall of filing cabinets still stood like sentinels.

The third cabinet had been pulled forward.

The hidden steel door leading down to the underground command center was wide open.

A pale, flickering beam of artificial light spilled upward from the stairwell, accompanied by the faint, rhythmic clicking of computer keys.

Claire exchanged a brief, decisive glance with Daniel. She stepped up to the threshold of the stairwell, her hand resting on the cold steel handrail, and began to descend into the subterranean vault.

As she reached the bottom of the stairs, the high-tech sanctuary of her grandmother’s command center came into view.

The massive digital monitors mounted on the northern wall were fully illuminated, casting a sickly blue glow across the polished concrete floor. Stacks of old paper archives were pulled from their secure drawers, scattered across the central steel desk.

And standing before the primary terminal, typing furiously into the keyboard, was a woman.

She wore an expensive, sharp charcoal trench coat, her platinum-blonde hair worn in a sleek, straightened bob that looked nothing like the cheap synthetic waves of her youth. But the arrogant set of her shoulders and the sharp tilt of her chin were unmistakably Chloe Sterling.

"I wouldn't hit the enter key if I were you, Chloe," Claire’s voice cut through the hum of the servers like a razor blade.

Chloe froze. Her fingers hovered an inch above the mechanical keyboard.

Slowly, deliberately, Chloe turned around on her stool, a cold, triumphant smirk stretching across her lips. She looked older, harder, and entirely devoid of the nervous vanity she had worn a decade ago in Grant’s office.

"Claire," Chloe purred, leaning back against the edge of the desk and crossing her arms. "I wondered how long it would take the queen of the harbor to notice someone was rattling her castle gates."
