Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum

"It's not extortion, it's business negotiation," Chloe snapped, losing her polished veneer for a split second as her frustration flared. She walked back over to the terminal, tapped a key, and brought up a legal draft on the main display screen.

"Fifty million dollars transferred into an unlisted overseas account, plus a permanent seat on the Bennett-Moretti board of directors with full voting privileges," Chloe read from the screen, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. "You do that by noon tomorrow, and I ‘lose’ the patent challenge files forever. If you don't? I walk into the federal courthouse at 9:00 a.m. and file an emergency injunction that freezes every single container ship you have at sea."

The underground vault fell into absolute silence.

The low hum of the servers seemed to magnify the tension in the room.

Claire looked at the screen, then back at Chloe. She didn't look panicked. She didn't look cornered. She looked like a chess player watching an amateur make a move that completely exposed their king on the second turn.

"Chloe," Claire said, her voice terrifyingly gentle. "Do you know what happened to the last person who tried to blackmail me using forged documents and recycled threats from Vincent’s past?"

Chloe’s jaw tightened. "That was Elena Ward. She was an amateur."

"Elena Ward was a Harvard law graduate with ten years of political connections," Claire corrected smoothly, taking two unhurried steps closer to the desk. "She ended up spending fifteen years in a federal penitentiary in upstate New York, sharing a concrete block with women who didn't appreciate corporate ambition."

"I am not Elena!" Chloe hissed, her face flushing with sudden rage. "I have legal title! I have registered filings! You can't touch me without triggering a public scandal that will tank your stock before the bell rings!"

"You assume I care about the stock market more than I care about justice," Claire replied, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, unyielding authority. "And more importantly... you assume my grandmother left this vault without a trapdoor."

Before Chloe could react, Claire reached out and pressed a manual override switch hidden beneath the edge of the mahogany desk—a switch Margaret Bennett had installed to lock down the facility during corporate raids.

Clang.

Heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the basement stairwell and the upper ventilation shafts, sealing the underground vault completely off from the outside world.

At the same time, the main computer terminal flashed from bright blue to a stark, warning-red interface: System Lockdown Initiated. Data Export Blocked. Federal Law Enforcement Pings Dispatched.

Chloe spun around in horror, punching furiously at the keyboard. "What did you do?! You locked the data nodes! The export script is halfway through uploading to my external server!"

"The script isn't uploading to your server, Chloe," Claire said, standing tall and looking down at her with cold detachment. "It’s routing directly to the Department of Justice's cyber-crime division. Every keystroke you made tonight, every proxy IP address you used, and every fraudulent document you filed has been recorded, timestamped, and authenticated by federal cyber-forensics."

Chloe’s face turned the color of ash. She stumbled back against the desk, her eyes wide with sudden, suffocating panic. "You... you set a trap."

"You walked into a cage, Chloe," Claire said quietly, turning toward the heavy steel door where Daniel stood waiting. "And the door is locked."
