Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Sterling-Holloway Myth

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant autumn sky that sparkled over the Boston harbor.

Inside the executive boardroom on the thirty-fifth floor of Bennett-Moretti Global Logistics, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the quiet panic of the underground vault.

Federal agents from the Department of Justice, led by Agent Thomas Sterling, sat around the mahogany table alongside Marcus Vance, who had flown in from his retirement home in Cape Cod specifically to witness the final chapter of the Sterling-Holloway farce.

Chloe Sterling sat at the center of the table, her hands cuffed loosely in front of her, her designer trench coat looking rumpled and stained from spending the night in a secure holding cell. Her haughty composure had entirely collapsed, replaced by a sullen, bitter silence.

Claire sat at the head of the table, sipping her morning peppermint tea, her expression completely serene.

"The forensic audit of the Sterling-Holloway shell corporation is complete," Agent Sterling announced, placing a thick dossier on the table in front of Claire. "The municipal easement was filed using forged probate signatures, and the patent challenge has zero legal standing under the 2018 supreme court precedent regarding acquired corporate assets. Chloe is looking at a minimum of ten years for wire fraud, forgery, and extortion."

Marcus Vance adjusted his glasses, scanning the summary report with a faint smile. "It seems some people never learn that the Bennett family archives are less of a library and more of a roach motel. You check in, but you don't check out with the silver."

Claire didn't smile. She felt no joy in Chloe’s downfall—only a profound, weary sense of closure. She looked across the table at the woman who had once stood in Grant’s office holding titanium shears, thinking she could carve away someone else's life to fit her own ambitions.

"Take her away," Claire instructed quietly, nodding to the federal agents.

As Chloe was hauled out of the boardroom in handcuffs, she didn't scream or thrash. She simply kept her head down, her hair falling across her face, swallowed entirely by the consequences of her own choices.

When the heavy double doors clicked shut behind them, Marcus Vance leaned back in his leather chair and looked at Claire with deep respect.

"Well, Director," the veteran attorney said softly. "It appears the harbor is finally, truly clear of ghosts."

"Ghosts only linger if you keep the doors shut to the light, Marcus," Claire replied, setting her teacup down and looking out the window toward the sunlit shipping lanes where her son’s future was being built.
