Chapter 5 - The Confession in the Library

The mahogany-paneled library smelled of old leather, aged bourbon, and burning cedar logs. Outside, the Seattle rain began to drum a steady, rhythmic tattoo against the tall leaded-glass windows, casting a warm, amber glow across the Persian rug.

Amelia sat on the edge of a deep leather armchair, a steaming mug of chamomile tea clutched tightly between both hands. The twins were finally fast asleep in the adjoining playroom, tucked safely under the watchful eye of the estate’s trusted head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable.

Victor stood by the fireplace, one arm resting against the mantel, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Amelia. He hadn't touched his drink. He couldn't take his eyes off her.

"My father is Arthur Brooks," Amelia began quietly, her voice steady now, though her fingers still trembled slightly against the ceramic mug. "He used to be the chief financial officer for Vance Logistics before Richard forced him out ten years ago, framing him for embezzlement to cover up his own illegal offshore accounts. My father spent three years in federal prison. When he got out, he was a broken man."

Victor’s jaw tightened. "And Richard held that over him."

"Yes," Amelia nodded, looking up with fierce, burning determination in her eyes. "When Richard started expanding his illegal acquisitions inside Hale International last year, he discovered my father was trying to legally clear his name. Richard threatened to send him back to prison unless my father forced me—using my teaching degree and child-care background—to infiltrate your household as a spy."

"A spy," Victor repeated dryly, a faint, melancholic smile touching the corner of his mouth. "And what intelligence were you supposed to gather for Richard?"

"Your security codes, your travel itineraries, and any leverageable weaknesses in your personal life," Amelia admitted, her cheeks flushing a deep crimson. She lowered her gaze to her tea. "They thought you were an unfeeling corporate machine. They thought I could easily manipulate you, steal the encryption keys from your safe, and hand them over."

"Why didn't you?" Victor asked softly, closing the distance between them. He knelt down on one knee right in front of her chair, bringing himself down to her eye level, just as he had done on the floor of the foyer hours earlier.

Amelia looked down into his dark, intense eyes. The raw honesty in his expression melted away her remaining defenses.

"Because on my first day here," Amelia whispered, her voice cracking, "I walked into the nursery and found you sitting in the dark rocking chair, holding baby Nora while she slept. You didn't know I was watching. You whispered an apology to her... and to the memory of Emily. You told her you were sorry you didn't know how to be a father, but you promised you would figure it out before they grew up."

Victor’s breath caught in his throat. He had completely forgotten that night—a night of absolute despair when he thought he was entirely alone in the world.

"I realized then," Amelia continued, a tear slipping down her cheek, "that you weren't a tyrant. You were just a grieving father drowning in an ocean of money, starving for human connection. And I couldn't betray a man who was already fighting a war inside his own head every single day."

Victor reached out, gently covering her trembling hands with his own, pulling the mug away and setting it safely on the mahogany side table. He intertwined his fingers with hers, his thumb tracing the back of her hand with infinite tenderness.

"You didn't just save my children today, Amelia," Victor said, his voice dropping into a deep, resonant rumble that vibrated through the quiet room. "You saved my soul. For years, I tested everyone around me because I expected them to fail. I wanted proof that human beings were fundamentally selfish. But you... you proved me wrong in the most profound way possible."

Amelia’s heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She could feel the solid, comforting warmth of his hands, the intense, unwavering devotion shining in his eyes.

"What happens now, Victor?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackling of the fireplace. "Richard is gone, but the board still has ties to my father's old case. If we don't move carefully—"

"Let them try," Victor interrupted, a dangerous, confident smirk playing on his lips. "As of tomorrow morning, I’m dissolving the board's oversight committee, clearing my father's name, and launching a full federal investigation into Richard Vance. But more importantly..."

May you like

He paused, sliding his hand up to cup her jaw gently, his thumb brushing her cheekbone.

"...tomorrow morning, I’m going to officially ask the most important woman in this estate to stop being my employee... and start being my partner."
