Chapter 7 - The Shadows Begin to Fade

By late afternoon, the corporate storm had passed, leaving Hale International purged of its most toxic elements. Victor and Amelia returned to the estate just as the golden afternoon sunlight began to flood the sprawling gardens.

The heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the mansion for years—a ghost of isolation and grief—seemed to have evaporated completely.

As they walked through the front doors, the sound of bright, joyful toddler laughter echoed down the main hallway. Evan and Nora came tearing out of the playroom, chasing a colorful rubber ball, with Mrs. Gable trailing closely behind them with a warm smile.

When the twins saw Amelia, they shrieked with delight, abandoning the ball and running as fast as their short little legs could carry them straight toward her.

Amelia dropped immediately to her knees, laughing brightly as both children collided into her arms, nearly knocking her over in their eagerness to hug her.

"Did you miss me, my little explorers?" Amelia beamed, kissing both of their chubby cheeks while they giggled uncontrollably.

Victor stood a few feet away, leaning against the polished wood of the console table, watching the scene unfold with a heart so full it felt ready to burst. For years, he had believed that love was a weakness, that family was an obligation, and that a home was just a glorified hotel with expensive security systems.

Now, watching Amelia interact with his children—and feeling the warm, inviting gravitational pull she exerted on his entire existence—he understood the brutal truth of how much time he had wasted.

He wasn't just a provider anymore. He was a father.

Amelia looked up from the floor, catching Victor’s gaze. The playful warmth in her eyes softened into something deeper, more tender, as she gently extricated herself from the hugging toddlers and stood up, walking slowly toward him.

"You handled the board like a seasoned emperor today," Amelia teased gently, a faint smile playing on her lips. "I think half the directors were ready to resign before you even opened your mouth."

"They deserved worse," Victor replied smoothly, stepping closer to her until the space between them vanished. He reached out, his hand gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Though I must admit... watching my brilliant, fearless nanny dismantle a corporate embezzlement ring in a navy blazer was quite possibly the most attractive thing I have ever witnessed in my entire life."

Amelia’s cheeks flushed a delicate pink, her dark eyes sparkling with quiet amusement. "Is that so? And here I thought you only liked corporate titans in custom-tailored suits."

"Suits are overrated," Victor murmured, his voice dropping into a rich, velvety register as his gaze drifted down to her lips. "Truth is... I spent my whole life searching for someone who could match my ambition. But what I actually needed was someone who could teach me how to feel."

The twins babbled happily in the background, chasing their rubber ball back toward the playroom, leaving Victor and Amelia suspended in their own private universe.

Victor reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against a small, velvet-covered box he had picked up from a private jeweler during his lunch break. It wasn't planned. It wasn't calculated as a test or a corporate strategy. It was the most honest, impulsive thing he had ever done in his life.
