Chapter 1 - The Warrants

The cold, metallic click of my new deadbolt turned with a firm thud. I opened the heavy oak door just a few inches, keeping the security chain latched.

"May I help you, officers?" I asked, keeping my tone smooth, unbothered, and precise.

The taller officer, whose nametag read Detective Miller, didn't return my polite demeanor. His hand rested casually—yet deliberately—near the leather holster at his hip. Beside him, a younger female officer held a clipboard with a official yellow file clipped to the front.

"Are you Evelyn Vance?" Detective Miller asked, his eyes darting past my shoulders to scan the polished hardwood floors of my quiet entryway.

"I am," I replied calmly, crossing my arms over my silk robe.

"Ma'am, we need you to step outside, or unlatch this door. We are executing an emergency federal arrest warrant and search authorization for this residence."

A small, quiet laugh nearly escaped my throat, but I caught it. "An arrest warrant? On what grounds, Detective? I was asleep until five minutes ago."

"Your husband, Mark Vance, was pronounced dead in a private villa outside Cancun four hours ago," Officer Miller said without a shred of empathy. "And his companion, Chloe Bennett, is currently in critical condition at a Mexican trauma center after surviving an intentional poison exposure."

The air in the foyer suddenly felt heavy, but my pulse didn't jump. Not even a flutter. After twenty-five years of building a multi-million-dollar forensic accounting firm from nothing, I knew how criminals worked. And I knew how setup plays were constructed.

"Mark is dead?" I repeated softly, letting the sentence hang between us. "And Chloe was poisoned?"

"The local Mexican authorities worked with the FBI's international liaison unit overnight," the female officer chimed in, stepping forward. "Before she lost consciousness, Ms. Bennett identified you as the person who sent a luxury champagne and fruit basket to their villa. The resort's digital ledger shows the gift package was ordered and paid for using your primary black card less than twelve hours ago."

They thought they had me in a steel trap. They believed a bitter, fifty-year-old betrayed wife had ordered a poisonous parted gift to murder her cheating husband and his mistress in cold blood.

"Detective," I said, unlatching the chain and pulling the front door wide open. "You are welcome to step inside. But before you place a single handcuff on my wrists, you might want to call your international liaison back."

Miller blinked, taken aback by my complete lack of panic. "Why is that, Mrs. Vance?"

"Because at midnight, I cancelled every credit card under my name," I said, pointing toward my study desk where the printed confirmation receipts sat neatly stacked. "And if that champagne basket was charged to my card after midnight, it means whoever murdered my husband used a cloned card—or your primary suspect isn't standing in front of you in a silk robe."
