Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

By noon, the federal arrest warrant against me was officially suspended due to the hard digital proof of my card cancellations and the vast financial records Eleanor dropped onto the U.S. Attorney’s desk.
I didn't waste time celebrating. Grief was a luxury I refused to afford myself; anger was a tool I intended to use with mathematical precision.
I spent the afternoon locked inside my home office, surrounded by three monitors displaying line after line of raw banking code, international wire logs, and encrypted server transactions. With Mark dead and Chloe in a medically induced coma in Mexico, the trail of the stolen eight million dollars had gone cold for the police. But police look for physical weapons and fingerprints. I looked for numbers.
And numbers never lie.
"Found it," I muttered to myself at 3:40 PM.
My screen flashed green as I cracked the secondary offshore routing layer of a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Marlowe Holdings.
Mark hadn't transferred the eight million dollars directly into a private bank account. He had routed it through a decentralized cryptocurrency laundering network managed out of a private wealth firm in downtown Miami—a firm owned by none other than Arthur Sterling, my late husband’s long-time country club poker partner and a major shareholder in local real estate.
My phone rang. It was Eleanor.
"Evelyn," Eleanor said, her tone urgent. "I just got off the phone with the FBI liaison in Cancun. Chloe Bennett just woke up in the ICU. She’s terrified, and she’s asking to speak directly to you."
"To me?" I asked, leaning back in my leather chair. "Not her lawyer? Not the police?"
"She told the agents that if you don't come to Mexico, the rest of the money will be wiped out, and the people who killed Mark will make sure your company burns to the ground by Friday."

I looked at the name Arthur Sterling glowing on my computer screen.
"Book me on the next private flight to Cancun, Eleanor," I said flatly. "It's time I collected my answers in person."
