Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Basement

The gala ended at 2:00 AM.
While the city slept under a heavy shroud of fog, the dark underbelly of the Marchetti estate was awake and alive with deadly activity.
I insisted on coming down. Damian had tried to convince me to stay in the suite with the children, but I refused. "They stole my life for fourteen months, Damian," I had told him firmly in the hallway. "I am not going to sit upstairs drinking tea while you get answers. I want to look that doctor in the eye."
Seeing the unbreakable fire in my hazel eyes, Damian had simply nodded and handed me a small, sleek silver hand-gun. "Keep the safety on unless I tell you otherwise," he had murmured. "Follow my lead."
Now, we descended a long, damp stone staircase beneath the eastern wing of the manor. The air grew colder, smelling of concrete, iron, and old dust. At the end of the corridor stood a heavy steel door guarded by two heavily armed soldiers.
Viktor unlocked the door, pushing it open.
Inside, sitting in a metal chair bolted to the floor beneath a single, harsh fluorescent light bulb, was Dr. Arthur Vance.
He looked pitiful. The expensive designer suit he had worn in his Manhattan penthouse was wrinkled and stained. His hands were zip-tied behind his back, his hair disheveled, and his face pale with sweat. When the door opened and he saw Damian walk in, he began to tremble uncontrollably.
"Don Marchetti! Please!" Dr. Vance sobbed, his voice echoing frantically off the concrete walls. "I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know what they were going to do! I was forced! Bernardo Falcone threatened to kill my family!"
Damian didn't say a word. He walked to a wooden table in the corner of the room, casually pulling off his leather gloves.
Then, I stepped out from the shadows behind Damian, stepping into the harsh white light.
Dr. Vance’s jaw dropped. His eyes nearly bulged out of his head as he stared at me. "C-Clara?" he gasped, his voice cracking. "Clara Vance?"
"Hello, Doctor," I said, my voice cold and hollow, surprising even myself with how steady I sounded. "Do you remember me? Or do you steal so many newborn babies that my face just blends into the crowd?"
"Clara... oh God, Clara, listen to me," Dr. Vance pleaded, tears streaming down his sweaty face. "You have to believe me! I had massive gambling debts! The Falcones bought my paper! They told me if I didn't find a young, single mother with no family to swap the babies with, they would throw my daughter into the East River!"
"So you chose my babies instead?" I asked, stepping right up to his chair. I felt no pity for him. None at all. All I felt was a cold, fiery rage burning through my veins. "You took three healthy infants out of my arms, told me they were dead, and handed them to a mob boss's insane wife?"
"Elena Falcone was dying of uterine cancer!" Dr. Vance blabbered, desperate to save his skin. "She knew she only had a year left! She wanted an heir to secure her family's dominance over the Marchetti territory! She paid me two million dollars! I—I gave half of it to a offshore trust!"
Damian walked over, resting a heavy hand on my shoulder. His touch grounded me, keeping my rage from exploding.
"Tell us about the delivery night, Arthur," Damian commanded softly. "Every detail. If you leave out a single second, Viktor will start removing your fingers with a pair of rusty pliers."
Viktor stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel pliers from his belt with a terrifyingly casual flick of his wrist.
Dr. Vance let out a pathetic whimpering sound. "Okay! Okay! I'll tell you everything! It wasn't just Elena! Julian Falcone was the mastermind!"
My eyes narrowed. "Julian?"
"Yes!" Dr. Vance cried out. "Julian was the one who provided the artificial insemination samples for Clara! He selected Clara from a database of local free-clinic patients because her blood type matched Elena's! He wanted Clara’s triplets to carry his DNA so that when Damian was eventually eliminated, Julian could step in as 'uncle' and legal guardian of the Marchetti estate!"
"And Elena’s death?" Damian asked, his dark eyes narrowing to deadly slits. "The records said she died of a sudden hemorrhage during the fake delivery."
Dr. Vance swallowed hard, looking like he was about to vomit. "She... she didn't die of a hemorrhage."
The room went dead silent.
"What did you say?" Damian whispered, his voice dropping into a register of absolute horror.
"Julian killed her," Dr. Vance confessed, his body shaking violently. "Elena was getting cold feet. On the night Clara was brought in for the C-section, Elena panicked. She said she couldn't go through with the lie, that she was going to tell Damian the truth about her cancer and the stolen babies. So... so Julian poisoned her IV line with a lethal dose of potassium chloride while she was sedated. Then he forced me to forge the cause of death as a birth hemorrhage!"
I gasped, covering my mouth in shock.
Julian Falcone hadn't just stolen my children—he had murdered his own sister in cold blood to secure power!
Damian stood frozen. A terrifying, inhuman quiet washed over him. The air in the concrete basement suddenly felt suffocating, as if the oxygen was being sucked right out of the room. He didn't scream, he didn't throw a punch. He simply reached into his shoulder holster, pulled out a sleek silver handgun, and racked the slide with a clean, sharp clack.
"Damian, wait!" I cried out, grabbing his arm.
Damian stopped, looking down at me. His dark eyes were completely black, consumed by a absolute, terrifying void of pure rage. "He murdered my wife, Clara. He stole your children. He turned our lives into a bloodbath."
"I know," I pleaded, holding onto his arm with both hands. "I want him to pay just as much as you do! But if you shoot this doctor now, we lose our primary witness! We need him alive to expose Julian to the rest of the Syndicate! If the other mafia families find out Julian murdered his own sister and faked an heir, the entire Syndicate will turn against the Falcones! They will execute Julian themselves!"
Damian stared at me for three agonizing seconds. The muscle in his jaw flexed violently as he calculated the options.
Slowly, terrifyingly, he lowered the gun.
He leaned down, grabbing Dr. Vance by the hair, forcing the terrified doctor to look up into his demonic glare.
"You are going to sign a sworn confession," Damian whispered into Dr. Vance’s face. "You are going to record a video detailing every single order Julian Falcone gave you. And then, you are going to sit in this dark room until I call the Syndicate Commission meeting."
"I'll do it! I'll sign anything! Just don't kill me!" Dr. Vance wept frantically.
Damian released his hair, letting the doctor's head flop back against the metal chair. He turned to Viktor. "Get the cameras. Get the documents. If he faints, throw cold water on him."
"Yes, Boss," Viktor replied smoothly.
Damian grabbed my hand, his grip tight, almost desperate. He pulled me out of the basement room, locking the heavy steel door behind us.
As we walked back up the stone stairs toward the light of the upper house, Damian’s heavy breath echoed off the walls. I could feel the tremendous strain he was under—the weight of a man who had lived a lie for fourteen months, a man whose pride and heart had been brutally ripped apart.
When we reached the top of the stairs, I pulled him to a stop in the quiet corridor.
"Damian," I said softly, reaching up to lay my hand gently against his cheek.
He closed his eyes at my touch, leaning his face into my palm. A deep, heavy sigh escaped his lips—a sound of profound exhaustion and buried pain.
"I loved her once, Clara," Damian murmured, his voice barely audible. "Elena. I thought I failed her because I wasn't there when she died. I spent fourteen months blaming myself for her death while raising three children I thought were our legacy."
"It wasn't your fault," I whispered, tears filling my eyes as I stroked his jawline. "You were betrayed by people who were supposed to be family. But you aren't alone anymore, Damian. We are going to protect these babies together."
Damian opened his dark eyes, looking down at me with an intensity that made my heart leap into my throat. He reached up, covering my hand on his cheek with his own large palm.
"I didn't think I could ever trust a woman again," Damian rasped, stepping closer until there was no space between us. "Then you walked into that diner, Clara. You faced down an entire room of killers just to touch your children's hands."
He leaned down, his forehead resting against mine.
May you like
"You aren't just the mother of my children, Clara," Damian whispered, his breath warm against my lips. "You are the only truth I have left in this dark world."
My heart pounded frantically against my ribs. Without another word, Damian tilted his head and covered my lips with his in a deep, desperate, overwhelming kiss that shattered every doubt I had ever held. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the terrifying, beautiful fire burning between us.
