Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Blood

The Grand Carlton Club was the absolute apex of underground luxury. Located on the penthouse floor of an exclusive skyscraper in the city's financial heart, its soundproofed walls, bulletproof glass, and mahogany-paneled dining rooms had hosted the secret deals that shaped the nation’s underworld for over half a century.
Tonight, the grand dining hall was surrounded by forty elite Syndicate guards representing the five primary families.
At the center of the room sat a massive circular oak table. Seated around it were four older men in expensive suits—the senior bosses of the Midwest underworld. Standing at the head of the table was Don Bernardo Falcone. The old man looked triumphantly smug, leaning on his gold-topped cane, convinced that his son Julian’s tactical strike had already wiped out the Marchetti bloodline.
"Gentlemen," Don Bernardo announced, his raspy voice echoing off the high ceiling. "We are here tonight to discuss the total forfeiture of the Marchetti territory. Don Damian Marchetti has failed to respect our traditions, attacked my son without provocation, and proven himself unfit to hold the northern shipping ports."
"And where is Damian tonight, Bernardo?" asked Don Moretti, the stoic, white-haired boss from Chicago. "He was summoned to this Commission just as you were. It is uncharacteristic of him to be late."
"Damian is likely hiding in his fortress, trembling," Don Bernardo sneered softly. "Or perhaps he has met with an unfortunate accident—"
BANG!
The heavy double mahogany doors of the penthouse ballroom were blown completely off their brass hinges by a breaching charge, slamming onto the polished marble floor with a deafening roar!
Thick smoke poured through the doorway.
Don Bernardo jumped back in shock, his bodyguards instantly drawing their weapons. Every boss at the table stood up in utter chaos.
Through the clearing smoke walked Damian Marchetti.
He looked like a vision straight out of a brutal legend. He wore a fresh black suit, but he didn't bother hiding the bandage wrapped around his neck. Walking beside him was Viktor, carrying a large industrial metal trunk, flanked by ten heavily armed Marchetti soldiers.
And walking right at Damian’s right hand was me.
I wore a sharp, tailored white suit that contrasted sharply with the dark colors of the room. My hair was tied back in a sleek ponytail, my hazel eyes cold, bright, and completely fearless.
"Looking for me, Bernardo?" Damian’s voice boomed across the silent ballroom like thunder.
Don Bernardo’s face went ghost-white. His hands trembled against his gold cane. "Damian?! How... how are you alive?!"
"You sent fifteen men to my house, old man," Damian said, walking up to the circular table with absolute, terrifying calm. "They are all currently lying in my garden, waiting for the incinerator."
Damian signaled to Viktor.
Viktor stepped forward, slamming the heavy industrial metal trunk onto the center of the mahogany table, directly in front of Don Bernardo.
"What is the meaning of this insolence?!" Don Bernardo yelled, trying to mask his rising terror. "You break into a sanctioned Commission meeting with weapons?!"
"I am here to present evidence of treason, Bernardo," Damian declared, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.
Damian clicked the latches on the metal trunk and threw the lid open.
Inside the trunk lay Julian Falcone—bound in thick iron chains, his face battered, his jaw wired shut, sobbing pathetically through his bruised lips. Beside him lay a high-definition video monitor connected to a flash drive.
The four neutral Syndicate bosses gasped, leaning in to look into the trunk.
"Julian!" Don Bernardo screamed, stepping forward. "Damian, you bastard! What did you do to my son?!"
"Your son is a traitor to the Syndicate code, Bernardo," I spoke up, stepping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Damian. My voice rang out clear and unshakeable. "And so are you."
Don Moretti of Chicago narrowed his sharp gray eyes at me. "Who are you, young woman?"
"I am Clara Marchetti," I answered proudly, taking Damian’s hand in mine. "The legitimate mother of the Marchetti heirs, and the woman your precious Falcones tried to murder."
Damian pressed a button on the video monitor inside the trunk.
The screen flickered to life, broadcasting the crystal-clear, recorded confession of Dr. Arthur Vance. The doctor’s voice echoed loudly through the silent room, detailing every single sick detail—the stolen triplets, the forged death certificates, the murder of Elena Falcone via potassium poison, and Julian’s plot to usurp the entire Syndicate through artificial bloodlines.
As the video played, the faces of the four neutral Syndicate bosses turned from curiosity to utter, disgusted horror.
In the mafia world, business was business, but murdering your own blood sister and stealing children was considered a unspeakable violation of the sacred honor code—a crime punishable by total, absolute erasure.
When the video finished, a suffocating silence fell over the penthouse.
Don Moretti slowly turned his gaze toward Don Bernardo Falcone. The old Chicago boss’s eyes were cold as ice.
"Is this true, Bernardo?" Don Moretti asked softly, his voice trembling with deep, ancient rage. "Did your son murder Elena? Did you order the theft of these children?"
"It's a lie! A fake video! Manufactured by Damian to take my land!" Don Bernardo screamed frantically, sweat pouring down his withered face. "Guards! Execute them!"
Don Bernardo’s four personal bodyguards reached for their guns, but before they could draw, the senior guards belonging to the other four Syndicate families stepped forward, pressing the cold barrels of their pistols directly against the backs of the Falcone guards' heads.
"Stand down," Don Moretti commanded flatly.
The Falcone guards slowly raised their hands, stepping away from Don Bernardo.
Don Moretti stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. He looked at Damian, then at me, bowing his head slightly in solemn respect.
"Don Damian, Mrs. Marchetti," Don Moretti declared formal judgment. "The Commission has reviewed the evidence. The actions of the Falcone family represent a treasonous violation of our most sacred laws. By unanimous decree of the four families, the Falcone syndicate is stripped of all territory, assets, and protection."
Don Moretti turned back to Don Bernardo, his eyes devoid of any mercy.
"You and your son are sentenced to death," Don Moretti announced. "And under ancient law, the execution of this contract is handed directly to the aggrieved party."
Don Bernardo collapsed onto his knees, weeping frantically, clutching his gold cane as his entire empire crumbled around him in a matter of seconds.
Damian stepped forward, drawing his heavy handgun from his suit. He looked down at the old man who had caused so much suffering, so much blood, and so much pain.

"This is for Elena," Damian said softly. "And for my wife."
BANG!
