Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The morning after the gala, the atmosphere inside the estate transformed completely. We were no longer hiding; we were preparing for absolute war.

By 9:00 AM, the estate was bustling with activity. Over thirty heavily armed Marchetti soldiers moved along the perimeter walls, installing heavy tactical barricades and surveillance equipment. Inside the main war room—a high-tech security office hidden behind a bookcase in Damian’s study—Viktor was busy coordinating intelligence reports.

I sat at a long glass conference table, holding Julian’s hand while Leo and Scylla played with toy trains on the thick carpet nearby. The children were completely unaware of the storm brewing around them; to them, the estate was a massive playground, and I was the center of their universe.

"Don Bernardo has called an emergency meeting of the Regional Syndicate Commission," Viktor reported, tapping a button on his console. A large holographic map of the city appeared on the wall screen, highlighting a historic brownstone in the financial district. "The meeting is set for tomorrow evening at 8:00 PM at The Grand Carlton Club."

Damian stood at the head of the table, leaning over the glass surface. "Who will be attending?"

"All five Syndicate families," Viktor replied. "Including Don Bernardo, Julian, and the senior neutral bosses from Chicago and New Jersey. Bernardo intends to use the meeting to officially challenge your authority over the northern shipping docks. He claims your public assault on Julian at the gala broke the ancient Syndicate code of conduct."

Damian let out a cold, dark laugh. "The old fool thinks he is walking into a political ambush to strip me of my territory. He doesn't know we hold the video confession of Dr. Vance."

"Are we going to present the video at the meeting?" I asked, looking up from Julian’s soft curls.

"Yes," Damian said, turning to look at me. "Under the ancient laws of the Syndicate, murdering a family member to usurp an empire carries an automatic death sentence pronounced by the Commission. When we play Dr. Vance’s confession in front of the five bosses, Don Bernardo and Julian will be declared traitors. Their own guards will be forced to turn on them."

"It sounds too easy," I said, a dark premonition knotting my stomach. "Julian isn't stupid, Damian. He saw how you reacted at the gala. He knows Dr. Vance missing from Manhattan. What if he realizes we know the truth before tomorrow night?"

Damian’s dark eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Clara is right, Viktor. Julian is a rat, but he is a paranoid rat. He won't wait for us to strike."

Before Viktor could answer, the red emergency lights on the wall screen began to flash violently. A loud, high-pitched alarm echoed through the war room.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

"Security breach at Gate 3!" a voice crackled over the intercom. "Heavy vehicles breaching the outer perimeter! We have armed hostiles—"

The audio cut off into a sharp burst of static, followed by the distant, muffled boom of an explosion that shook the entire mansion, rattling the crystal chandeliers in the hallway.

I gasped, instantly pulling all three children into my arms on the floor. Leo began to cry, clinging to my sweater, while Scylla buried her face against my neck.

"They're here," Viktor yelled, racking the slide of his assault rifle. "It's a full-scale assault!"

"Julian didn't wait for the Commission meeting," Damian growled, pulling two heavy handguns from under his desk console. His face was pure, terrifying fury. "He sent his hit squads directly to my home!"

"Damian! The children!" I screamed over the blaring alarm.

Damian sprinted across the room, grabbing my arm and pulling me to my feet while I held the three terrified children against me. He pushed open a hidden panel in the wooden wall behind his desk, revealing a narrow steel staircase leading down into the darkness.

"Take them into the reinforced safe room at the bottom of the stairs," Damian commanded, his voice urgent and absolute. "The door is four-inch solid titanium. Once you are inside, hit the green locking button. Nothing on earth can blow that door open."

"What about you?!" I cried out, grabbing his tactical vest. "Damian, don't leave us!"

Damian grabbed the back of my neck, pulling my face up to his. He pressed a harsh, fiery kiss against my lips—a promise signed in fire and blood.

"I am going to end this today, Clara," Damian growled into my mouth. "Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone except me."

He shoved me gently into the dark secret stairwell and slammed the hidden panel shut behind us.

The darkness of the stairwell was suffocating, punctuated only by the low, red glow of emergency strip lights running along the steps.

I scrambled down the cold concrete steps as fast as I could while carrying Julian and holding Leo’s small hand, with Scylla clutched tightly against my shoulder. Above us, the muffled sound of automatic gunfire, shattering glass, and shouting men echoed through the floorboards. The war for my children’s lives had reached the house.

At the bottom of the flight of stairs stood a massive titanium vault door with a digital keypad and a prominent green button on the interior frame.

I rushed inside, pulling all three toddlers into the small, carpeted room equipped with emergency monitors, food supplies, and medical kits. I slammed my hand onto the green locking button.

CLANG-THUD!

Heavy hydraulic deadbolts engaged with a deafening mechanical roar. The vault was sealed.

I sank onto the plush carpeted floor, pulling my three children into a tight circle around me. Tears streamed down my face, but I squeezed my eyes shut, rocking them back and forth. "Shh... shh, my sweet babies," I sang softly, my voice trembling violently. "Mama’s here. Mama’s got you. You're safe... you're safe..."

Julian and Leo hid their faces under my arms, while Scylla reached up with her tiny hand, gently wiping a tear from my cheek.

"Mama no cry," Scylla whimpered softly, her hazel eyes filled with a wisdom far beyond her fourteen months. "Papa fight."

My heart broke and swelled at the same time. Papa fight. She called Damian 'Papa'. Even in their young minds, they knew who loved them, who protected them, who was fighting above our heads to keep our family alive.

On the wall of the safe room, a small black-and-white security monitor turned on, displaying live camera feeds from the upper floor of the estate.

I watched in terrifying fascination.

The grand foyer was a warzone. Glass from the crystal chandeliers covered the white marble floor like snow. Over a dozen masked men in black tactical gear were storming up the grand staircase, firing automatic weapons.

Then, Damian appeared on the screen.

He moved like a god of war. He stepped out from the upper balcony, firing two heavy handguns with terrifying, mechanical precision. Every shot he fired dropped a hostile soldier to the floor. Beside him, Viktor provided suppressive rifle fire, holding the line at the top of the stairs.

Damian was hit—a dark stain spread across the shoulder of his jacket—but he didn't even flinch. He kept moving forward, kicking a soldier over the marble railing and clearing the grand hallway with sheer, unyielding brutality.

Suddenly, the central camera feed in the study went dark.

A second later, the audio intercom inside the safe room clicked on with a loud burst of static.

"Clara," a voice sneered smoothly through the speaker. It wasn't Damian.

It was Julian Falcone.

"I know you're down there in the vault, you little diner bitch," Julian’s voice echoed off the titanium walls, cold and mocking. "Did you really think Damian could protect you? My men have surrounded the estate. Damian is bleeding out in his own hallway."

My heart stopped beating. "Liar!" I screamed at the speaker, my voice trembling with rage. "He’s going to kill you!"

"Damian is finished," Julian laughed darkly through the intercom. "And you know what the best part is, Clara? I don't even need to break that titanium door open. I brought something special. Heavy industrial drill units connected to the mansion's central ventilation system."

My eyes darted up to the air vents near the ceiling of the safe room.

"In ten minutes, I'm going to pump fifty gallons of carbon monoxide directly down those vents," Julian whispered, his voice dripping with pure sadistic evil. "You and my bastard children will go to sleep, and by the time the Syndicate Commission arrives tomorrow morning, I will claim that Damian panicked and killed his own family before committing suicide."

I stared up at the ventilation shaft in utter horror as a faint, gray mist began to puff slowly through the iron grate.
