Chapter 1 - The First Lesson

...his jaw.

The crunch of bone breaking was a sound I had heard dozens of times during my four years as a Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) instructor at Quantico, but hearing it inside a luxury honeymooon suite felt eerily distant. Gregory’s eyes went wide with sheer, unadulterated shock as the force of my palm struck his chin, snapping his head backward. The aluminum baseball bat slipped instantly from his weakened grip.

Before the bat could even hit the plush carpet, my left hand snatched it out of the air.

Gregory stumbled back against the vanity mirror, clutching his shattered jaw, blood welling in his mouth. The look of predatory dominance he had worn seconds ago melted into pure terror. He tried to speak, but only a muffled groan escaped his lips.

"You forgot Rule Number One of close-quarters combat, Gregory," I said softly, my voice devoid of emotion, slipping into the cold, calculated mindset I had tried so hard to bury beneath designer heels and corporate boardrooms. "Never signal your attack, and never bring a blunt weapon within hand-to-hand range of someone who knows how to use your leverage against you."

He dropped to his knees, staring up at me as if I were a monster. To him, I was supposed to be Ashlynn Vance: the quiet, polished executive who smiled gracefully at dinner parties and laughed at his jokes. He didn't know Corporal Ashlynn Vance, the woman who had trained hundreds of Marines how to neutralize lethal threats with their bare hands.

"W-what are you?" he choked out, gasping through the blood filling his throat.

"I'm the person you shouldn't have married," I replied.

I didn't hit him with the bat. Instead, I tossed it onto the king-sized bed, walked over to the minibar, and pulled out a hand towel. I threw it at his face.

"Clean yourself up. We're going to talk."

Gregory wiped his face, trembling as he realized the dynamic of our relationship had permanently shifted in less than three seconds. But as he looked at me with newfound fear, his eyes flickered with something else—spite.

"You think... you think you won?" Gregory hissed, wincing as his jaw shifted. "You don't know who my father really is, Ashlynn. You think this was just about me breaking you in? This marriage was a contract. My family owns the logistics network your company uses. You just ruined your life."

I knelt down in front of him, getting so close he could smell the faint scent of my expensive French perfume mixed with the metallic tang of his own blood.

"Your father taught you how to strike a woman, Gregory," I whispered, pinning him with a frozen gaze. "My instructors taught me how to break a man’s trachea. If you ever raise a hand, a weapon, or your voice at me again, I won't just stop you. I'll destroy everything you and your father have ever built."

The cruise ship hit a swell, rolling gently on the ocean waters, pushing us further out into international territory. The honeymoon was over. The war had just begun.
