Chapter 10 - The Vows We Keep

One year later.

The private garden of our villa on Lake Geneva was filled with the fragrance of blooming white jasmine, lavender, and sweet mountain air.

It was a quiet, intimate ceremony. Only thirty guests were present—Arthur Vance, our close colleagues from the institute, and the small team of friends who had stood by us through the storm.

I stood before Julian under a canopy of white roses overlooking the blue waters of the lake.

I wore a breathtaking gown of fluid, simple ivory silk that flowed like water around my feet—no heavy lace, no train, and not a single crystal bead anywhere near my ribs.

Julian looked at me with an intensity of love so profound it made my breath catch. He held both of my hands in his, his thumbs softly stroking my wrists.

The minister smiled warmly at us. "Julian, you may speak your vows."

Julian looked into my eyes, his deep voice carrying clearly over the silent garden.

"Hannah," Julian said softly. "Two years ago, I entered your life during its darkest hour. I watched you face betrayal with a quiet, terrifying strength that changed my world forever. I didn't fall in love with you because you were strong; I fell in love with you because your heart remained pure even when the world tried to break it."

He squeezed my hands gently.

"I promise to honor your truth, to protect your peace, and to stand beside you as your partner, your champion, and your equal for all the days of my life. I don't give you a vow made in dark rooms—I give you my life in the light."

Tears of pure happiness glittered in my eyes. I smiled, looking into the eyes of the man who had become my anchor.

"Julian," I said, my voice rich with absolute certainty. "I spent a long time believing that love was something you had to earn by making yourself small. You showed me that real love gives you space to grow. You gave me back my strength, my father’s legacy, and my faith in people."

I stepped a fraction closer to him, locking my fingers firmly in his.

"I choose you today, tomorrow, and forever. Not as a refuge from the past, but as the architect of my future."

"By the authority vested in me," the minister announced, a radiant smile on his face, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Julian, you may kiss your bride."

Julian pulled me gently into his arms, wrapping his coat around me, and lifted me slightly as his lips met mine in a long, sweet, triumphant kiss.

The guests erupted into joyful applause, the sound mingling with the soft ringing of church bells across the lake.

That evening, long after the guests had retired to the villa for champagne and music, Julian and I walked down to the edge of our private stone pier.

The moon was full, casting a long, shimmering silver path across the dark, tranquil waters of Lake Geneva.

I rested my head against Julian’s broad chest, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of his heart beating against my cheek. His arm was wrapped securely around my shoulders, keeping the cool night breeze away.

"No rose petals," Julian whispered playfully into my hair, his lips softly brushing my temple.

I laughed—a light, free, joyous sound that echoed softly across the water.

"No rose petals," I agreed, looking up at his handsome, moonlit face. "Just us."

May you like

Julian leaned down, kissing me once more—a kiss that carried no secrets, no hidden clauses, and no dark rooms.

Just the light. And the promise of a lifetime.
