Chapter 3 - The Mirror Trap

The door unlocked with a faint click. I slipped inside Suite 1408, closing the door behind me until it rested silently against the latch.
The suite was identical in layout to mine, but it smelled of stale tobacco, dark coffee, and expensive leather. The blackout curtains were drawn tight against the sparkling San Francisco skyline.
On the massive glass dining table in the center of the room sat three laptops, two satellite modems, and a high-speed secure document scanner. The glowing blue lights of the hardware mirrored the precise interface of my father’s server.
Victoria Sterling’s personal terminal was open. On the screen was a live, ticking financial ledger displaying the MARSHALL-STERLING OVERSEAS ASSET POOL.
Below it was the pending execution window:
RECIPIENT: BENNETT LEGACY TRUST [ACCOUNT #8892-CH-ZURICH] AMOUNT: $312,450,000.00 USD STATUS: WAITING FOR BIOMETRIC/KEYBOARD AUTHORIZATION
Victoria had already pre-loaded the stolen credentials. All she was waiting for was midnight—or the moment Evan confirmed I was unconscious—to hit the final command.
I stepped quickly to the table, opened my tote bag, and inserted my father’s flash drive into the primary USB port of Victoria’s terminal.
A red terminal box immediately overlayed her screen:
[BENNETT CORE DETECTED]: AUTHORIZING HARDWARE OVERRIDE...
My fingers flew across her mechanical keyboard. I didn't delete the transfer—deleting it would give them time to cover their tracks, destroy their servers, and construct a different lie. Instead, I altered the primary routing protocol.
I replaced the destination account number with the master corporate account of STERLING GLOBAL HOLDINGS LTD, Victoria’s private shell company registered in Neviss. Then, I added an automated secondary loop: the moment the money hit her account, a copy of the complete transaction log, including the decrypted IP logs and Victoria’s personal encryption certificates, would be broadcast simultaneously to the SEC, the Department of Justice, and Arthur Vance’s legal team in Zurich.
ROUTING UPDATED. NEW RECIPIENT: STERLING GLOBAL HOLDINGS [ACCOUNT #1104-NV-PANAMA] EXECUTION TIME: 00:00:00 EST
"What a brilliant little ghost you are."
The voice came from the dark doorway of the bedroom.
I froze.
Victoria Sterling stepped out into the living room. She wasn't wearing her suit jacket anymore. She held a sleek, silver glass of sparkling water in one hand, and a small, compact black pistol in the other. Her dark eyes were entirely cold, completely devoid of surprise.
"Did you really think I wouldn't leave a motion-sensor ping on my own floor bridge, Hannah?" Victoria asked, her voice dangerously soft as she walked slowly toward the table. "I’ve been watching you on my phone monitor since you stepped out of Room 1402."
I slowly backed away from the table, keeping my hands visible, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"You’re too late, Victoria," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady. "The script is already executing. The moment midnight strikes, the SEC receives the complete paper trail."
Victoria smiled—a chilling, pitiless curve of her red lips. "The SEC receives whatever paper trail is found on the hardware in this room. And right now, the narrative is shifting."
She leveled the gun directly at my chest.
"An unfortunate tragedy," Victoria said smoothly. "The beautiful new Mrs. Marshall, overcome with guilt after realizing her late father’s trust was being investigated for massive international fraud, breaks into my suite, attempts to erase the evidence, and suffers a fatal altercation during a confrontation."
"And Evan?" I asked, stalling for every single second. "Do you think Evan will stay quiet when he finds out you murdered his wife?"
Victoria let out a short, melodic laugh that sent a shiver down my spine. "Evan? Evan is an idiot who thinks with his ego. He thinks he’s moving to Singapore with three hundred million dollars. He doesn't know that once the transfer completes to my shell company, he’s the one who takes the full criminal fall alongside your father’s estate. I’m leaving for London in twenty minutes, Hannah. Evan will be arrested in the lobby before sunrise."
The door behind me suddenly burst open.
Evan stood in the doorway, out of breath, his tie loosened, his face flushed with sweat. He looked from Victoria, to the gun in her hand, to me standing beside the glowing terminal.
"Victoria!" Evan gasped, his eyes wide with shock. "What are you doing?! She wasn't in the room! I went back up and—"
"Shut the door, Evan," Victoria commanded without turning her head or lowering the gun. "Your naive little wife found the server. She’s currently trying to ruin everything we built."
Evan looked at me, his handsome face contorting into a sickening mix of fear, betrayal, and dark rage. "Hannah... what did you do?"
I looked at the man I had loved for two years, feeling nothing but a profound, icy disgust.
"I didn't do anything, Evan," I said softly. "Ask Victoria whose account the three hundred million is currently being sent to. Read the screen."
Evan’s eyes flicked toward the glowing monitor on the dining table. He saw the Panama routing code. He saw Victoria’s personal shell company name flashing in bright red text.
"What... what is that?" Evan stammered, taking a step toward the table. "Victoria? That’s not the Bennett Trust account. That’s your corporate holding company!"
"Stay back, Evan!" Victoria snapped, her arm twitching slightly.
"You lied to me!" Evan screamed, his composure completely shattering into pathetic, desperate panic. "You were going to steal the entire fund! You were going to leave me here to take the blame for the SEC investigation!"
Evan lunged forward—not at me, but at Victoria.
A deafening BANG echoed through the suite as Victoria fired. The bullet shattered a crystal vase on the side table, sending glass and water exploding across the hardwood floor.
Evan stumbled back, screaming in terror, tripping over his own feet and crashing heavily onto the glass dining table.
In that single second of total chaos, the wall clock above the television clicked softly.
12:00:00 a.m.
The terminal emitted a high-pitched, harmonic chime.
TRANSFER EXECUTED SUCCESSFUL. BROADCASTING ENCRYPTED AUDIT LOGS TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES...
Victoria gasped, turning frantically toward the screen, her composure vanishing as she realized what had just happened. She reached out to pull the power cable from the wall, but before her fingers could touch the cord, the heavy double doors of Suite 1408 were kicked entirely off their frame.
Four massive men in tactical dark suits, bearing the crest of Vance International Security, flooded into the room with terrifying precision.
"FEDERAL AGENTS AND PRIVATE SECURITY! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"
Victoria froze. Her gun clattered to the floor as two operators wrestled her to the carpet, securing her arms in heavy zip-ties. Evan was dragged off the shattered table, blubbering and bleeding from a minor cut on his arm, screaming that he was innocent, that he was a victim of corporate manipulation.
From the hallway, a tall, distinguished man in an impeccable charcoal suit stepped calmly over the broken door frame. He carried a silver-headed walking stick and had sharp, piercing blue eyes framed by silver hair.
Arthur Vance.
He glanced at the blubbering Evan Marshall, brushed a speck of dust from his sleeve, and then looked at me.
"Your father always said you had impeccable timing, Hannah," Arthur said, his Swiss accent warm and unshakeable. "Are you injured?"
May you like
I looked at my wedding ring—the sparkling diamond Evan had placed on my finger three hours ago. I slowly pulled it from my finger, walked over to where Evan was pinned to the floor by a security operator, and dropped the ring onto his bleeding arm.
"I’m not injured, Arthur," I said, my voice carrying the cold, quiet strength of a woman who had just survived her own execution. "I’m divorced."
