Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Century

Two months later, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was surrounded by hundreds of reporters and citizens.

The "Live Burial Trial" became the most televised legal event in the country’s history. With the uncorrupted files from the ledger, federal prosecutors dismantled not only Julian Ashford’s life but also his entire network of corrupt judges, medical examiners, and politicians.

Clara took the witness stand, her voice firm, clear, and unshakeable. She detailed every aspect of Julian's cruelty, showing the jury the permanent scars on her fingertips from clawing at the coffin lid.

Julian’s high-priced lawyers tried to argue insanity and medical error, but the overwhelming financial records proving he had insured Clara’s life for fifty million dollars just days before the poisoning obliterated any defense.

The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.

"On the charge of attempted first-degree murder: GUILTY."

"On the charge of human trafficking and racketeering: GUILTY."

"On the charge of kidnapping and evidence tampering: GUILTY."

The judge sentenced Julian Ashford to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would spend the rest of his natural life inside a cold, lightless cell—a fitting punishment for a man who tried to bury an innocent woman in the dark.
