Chapter 6 - The Counterattack

Two months passed. Lily was growing fast, her smiles becoming the brightest part of my days. I spent my mornings working from the nursery at the Whitmore estate and my afternoons restructuring the tech company, which I renamed Aegis Innovations. The company was finally turning a profit now that its funds weren't being stolen for video game upgrades.
However, Vivian Caldwell was not a woman who would disappear quietly into the night.
She had moved into a small, outdated two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city, using the last of her hidden savings. Every day she spent there fed her hatred for me. She couldn't accept that her status was gone. She couldn't accept that she was poor.
One afternoon, while I was preparing Lily's bottles, my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered it cautiously.
"Emma," Vivian's voice came through the line, cold and sharp. "I hope you are enjoying your little victory."
"Vivian," I said, my voice completely calm. "I am surprised you still have a phone line active. I assumed you'd be cut off by now."
"Listen to me, you arrogant bitch," she hissed. "You think you've won because you took the company and the apartment? You forgot one thing. Ethan is the biological father of that child. We have filed a lawsuit for full custody of Lily, along with a demand for substantial monthly child support from your family's estate."
I felt a cold chill in my stomach, but I kept my voice steady. "You have no chance of winning custody, Vivian. You are unstable, and Ethan is unemployed."
"Oh, really?" Vivian laughed, a dry, terrible sound. "We have hired a public relations firm, Emma. Tomorrow, we are going live on national television. We have an interview with a major entertainment news network. We are going to tell the world how the billionaire Whitmore family used their power to frame an innocent grandmother, steal a young entrepreneur’s startup, and tear a newborn baby away from her loving father. By the time we are done, your family’s stock prices will drop, and the court will have no choice but to give the child to us to save her from your toxic environment."
She hung up before I could reply.
I immediately called Robert Vance. "Robert, did you hear about this? They're going to the media."
"I just received the notification, Emma," Robert said, his tone surprisingly relaxed. "Don't worry. This is actually exactly what we wanted them to do."
"What do you mean?"
"Vivian is playing an old-school media game. She thinks public sympathy can override legal reality. She forgets that in the modern digital age, everything leaves a trace. We have been preparing a counter-strategy for weeks, waiting for them to make a public move. Let them do the interview. The bigger the audience, the harder they will fall."
The next night, my family gathered in the living room of the Whitmore estate, watching the television screen. The broadcast began with a dramatic headline: The Billionaire’s Trap: A Young Family Destroyed by Corporate Greed.
There sat Ethan and Vivian, dressed in simple, modest clothing to look like victims. Vivian looked tearful, holding a handkerchief to her eyes, while Ethan sat beside her, looking sad and defeated.
"She took everything from us," Vivian cried into the microphone. "My son worked day and night to build his company to provide for his family. But the moment Emma gave birth, her family used their immense wealth to throw us into the street. They even banned my son from seeing his own daughter! They are using their billions to treat us like animals."
The interviewer looked sympathetic. "Ethan, how does it feel to be separated from your newborn child?"
Ethan lowered his head, squeezing out a fake tear. "It’s a nightmare. Every day I wake up wanting to hold my little girl, but Emma’s security guards threaten me. I just want to be a father."

My mother was furious, clutching her fists, but my father just held her hand, smiling coldly at the screen.
"They just committed perjury on national television," Nathan said. "Robert, activate the response."
