Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

The trial for custody and the criminal assault charge took place a month later. Because of the heavy public interest, the courthouse was packed with reporters.
Vivian sat at the defense table wearing a simple black dress, her head lowered. She looked ten years older. Beside her, Ethan sat with a public defender. They could no longer afford a private attorney; every bank they approached had denied them loans, and their remaining assets had been seized to pay the employees Ethan had cheated.
I sat at the prosecution table with Robert Vance. My father sat behind me, his presence a powerful shield against any remaining arrogance the Caldwells might have had.
The judge, a serious woman with a reputation for zero tolerance toward family violence, reviewed the evidence quickly. She didn't need much time. The video evidence was undeniable.
"Mrs. Caldwell," the judge said, looking down at Vivian. "Your actions in that hospital room were not only criminal, they were a disgusting violation of human decency. To strike a woman who had just undergone major medical trauma, while she held a newborn child, shows a complete lack of empathy."
Vivian began to cry, but the judge raised her hand to silence her.
"For the charge of misdemeanor assault and battery, I sentence you to one year in the state correctional facility, with no possibility of early parole," the judge announced, slamming the gavel down.
Vivian gasped, collapsing into her seat as two female bailiffs stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back to place her in handcuffs. She looked at Ethan, screaming his name, but Ethan just kept his eyes glued to the table, refusing to look at his mother as she was led away to the cells.
Then, the judge turned her attention to Ethan.
"Mr. Caldwell, as for your petition for custody and child support... I find it almost laughable if it weren't so tragic. You have demonstrated a complete inability to provide a safe, stable, or emotionally mature environment for your daughter. Your behavior during the birth of your child was pathetic. You are currently unemployed, facing potential corporate fraud charges, and have shown a severe addiction to digital entertainment over your real-world responsibilities."
The judge cleared her throat, signing a document. "I hereby deny your custody petition in its entirety. Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent restraining order. You are stripped of all parental rights. You are prohibited from coming within one thousand feet of Lily Whitmore or Emma Whitmore for the rest of your life. And because of your financial history, any future earnings you may have will be automatically garnished to pay for the legal fees incurred by the plaintiff."
Ethan didn't say a word. He just nodded slowly. The finality of the gavel hitting the wood sounded like the closing of a tomb.

As we walked out of the courtroom, the reporters rushed toward us, their cameras flashing. Robert Vance made a brief statement, but I kept walking, holding my head high.
Ethan walked out through the side exit alone. He had no money, no family left outside of prison, and no name. As he walked down the steps into the afternoon sun, a group of teenagers recognized him. They pulled out their phones, laughing and filming him, shouting game references at him. He pulled his jacket hood over his head and ran into the crowded subway station, disappearing into the shadows of the city.
